Unleash your Cellphone's Potential

Cell phones are increasingly used as the primary way to access the internet, especially for
people of color and young adults. However, whatever your skill level, existing federal
policies greatly restrict the usefulness of our mobile phones, inhibiting innovation and
improvements in service, not to mention driving up our monthly bills. Because of this, it
is crucial and urgent that cell phone users become knowledgeable in policy and technology
issues that affect mobile wireless technology’s affordability, accessibility, and functionality.

Dialed In: A Toolkit to Liberate Your Cell Phone and Reclaim Media Agency expands this
power of mobile phones by teaching people how to expand the existing functionality of the
devices that are already in their pockets.

Mapping the Media Change Movement

Challenges Entered:

We want to launch a mapping mashup. We want to see where media activists are geographically, what kind of work they do (legal, organizing, academic, etc.), and who they work with, to create a social network map. A number of organizations have some of this data available on their websites. We are not certain that these data sources are compatible for a mapping mashup. To gather the data and keep it current, we would like to host a survey that answers our questions and gives the user instant visual feedback. After they complete the survey, they can use the map to explore the movement geographically and/or by resource type. Hopefully, once it gains a critical mass, anyone who hasn't signed on to use it won't want to be left out! We have two types of users in mind: 1. Media and Democracy Coalition members will track the movementâ€™s growth. 2. Organizations and individuals that are looking to connect, network with others can use the map to identify cooperative projects, share resources, and see that they are a part of a growing network of change agents and resources.
