Social Entrepreneurship

Nebula

Project URL:
http://www.nebula7.org
Short Project Overview:

SuperNova 7 Productions' mandate is to incite global grassroots action through the empowerment of social entrepreneurs. Nebula, SN7’s technology arm, functions as a tool for social entrepreneurs.  Nebula allows users to collaborate, connect, and implement projects in real time that promote social change worldwide.

Detailed Project Overview:

Imagine a global exchange for social entrepreneurs, a combination search engine and social networking tool enabling social change agents from around the world to connect, collaborate and affect change in their communities. Imagine the T.E.D. conference meeting the Burning Man/Cooling Man Project or the Obama campaign meeting the Skoll World Forum.

SuperNova7 Productions (SN7) was created with the vision of building Nebula through open source technology which would allow artists, professionals, students, and social entrepreneurs of all ages to share best and worst practices; access tools, resources, data and research; and seek funding to help execute social impact projects. Social entrepreneurs are segmented into different age groups, expertise, and geographic locations. They are also limited by some of the same issues as individuals, but if social entrepreneurs could unify their fragmented voices then they could organize very much like those who worked on the Obama campaign. Social entrepreneurs by the very nature of their work are involved with interdisciplinary sectors, while attracting diverse skill sets and standing for various social causes. Nebula would allow social entrepreneurs to have all the necessary tools to embark upon some of the daunting problems we face in this world. This user-friendly exchange would be available through the web, handheld devices and in person social networking. Search results would be in real-time which would give users the ability to see projects and ideas in progress around the world. This allows for complete transparency for all stakeholders and the presence of metrics to measure the social impact of initiatives. There would also be a built mechanism to have peer to peer review as seen in Wikipedia to ensure user content for social good.

Nebula is an application that will be used on mobile phones which uses current GPS technology. Nebula would allow social entrepreneurs to track one another around the world while matching Nebula users to other likeminded individuals. Currently, there is no application that allows social entrepreneurs to know of each other existence or the area of work they are involved with. As society’s problems become larger and increasingly serious with irreversible outcomes, Nebula’s mobile application would allow more collaboration with change agents on a global scale. Blackberries and iPhones would be the first wave of mobile devices to carry Nebula as an application.

SN7 also advocates youth participation in this movement by providing a linkage between entrepreneurs and those more established. This exchange encourages those entrepreneurs with mutual interests to connect, while supporting young entrepreneurs with a critical network of technical knowledge and advice that they regularly may not have access to. SN7 also plans to partner with or host two to four events next year in order to showcase the work of prominent social entrepreneurs/organizations in different U. S. cities. Through this effort, SN7 will aim to broaden exposure, solidify networks, and help entrepreneurs scale up. In its operation, SN7 is creating a unique one-stop-shop for social entrepreneurs which does not currently exist in the marketplace.

Examples of current advocacy and grassroots collaboration projects include partnerships with organizations such as GrassRoot Hoyas, Shine a Light and the India Peace Initiative.

What else have you done in this area?:

SuperNova7 Productions launched our website Nebula, on Jan 20, 2009 in its basic version with a limited budget.  php and mySQL programming were used on the initial launch. Moving forward we will use J2EE, JSR 168 & 286 portlets, alongside Java related open source frameworks. Our software developer recommended we use Liferay portal and mySQL to further develop Nebula. I identified an undergraduate from the University of California, Berkeley who I enlisted to do initial programming, and then recruited a software developer who is a Liferay Specialist who is now also programming.  By discussing options with hardware experts and receiving various recommendations, I chose and purchased a VPS server on March 9, 2009 using the hosting company RIMuHOSTING to begin integration of technologies mentioned above. Due to limited financial resources only the Liferay Specialist is coding on a volunteer basis. I have also researched graphic and web design companies as potential clients, and also tapped into the knowledge of personal contacts that have professional expertise within the area. Initial costs associated with developing

Phase 1 of Nebula are ongoing both in the web design and development areas. Once proper funding is secured, then development in both areas can be managed and executed with more resources. Phase 2 of Nebula would be to target educational institutions in the US and aboard as long term partners. In Phase 3 of Nebula’s development would be to customize the technology for filmmakers, musicians, artists, and other professionals. In Phase 4 would be the creation of a global social exchange for social entrepreneurs of all ages.

If a successful prototype of Nebula is functioning in fall of 2009, then it will be integrated into two undergraduate classes at the University of Rutgers, Social Entrepreneurship and Public Service Organizations by Professor Quintus Jett.  Professor Jett is currently a senior research fellow at the Center for Digital Strategies at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. I recruited Professor Jett to be a part of the advisory board for Nebula’s parent company, SuperNova7 Productions.Nebula would be used by his students as a learning tool in the classroom that will be developed and customized to manage their own needs.
In addition to this potential collaboration, I am currently working with non-profit, grassroots, and social issue groups to further enhance their operations by leveraging Nebula’s technology. Nebula has working partnerships with Shine a Light, GrassrootHoyas, and the India Peace Initiative.

Shine a Light is a non-profit based in São Paulo, Bogotá, and Mexico City linking 230 NGOs in 49 cities, by using filmmaking, photography, and a collaborative network to create spaces for marginalized children. Nebula is working with Shine a Light to create social media outlets to promote their best practices and create advocacy groups in the US.

GrassHoyas is a pilot project of Athletes United which aims to address the immediate need for HIV prevention education in Washington, DC. GrassrootHoyas mobilizes college athletes to empower local youth through soccer and basketball. Nebula is working with GrassrootHoyas to raise awareness with community events and strategic partnerships to help promote their cause.

India Peace Initiative is a grassroots group committed to protect the human rights for the people living in Orissa, India. Nebula is working with the India Peace Initiative to create a social media strategy in order to create awareness of the human rights violations to the global community.

Type of expertise needed:
Technical Expertise
Description:

Nebula would need programmers that have expertise in following technologies: Java/J2EE, JSP/Servlets, JSR 168&286 portlets, Velocity, JQuery, Liferay, Joomla, mySQL, Tomcat, php, Hibernate, and Spring.

Type of expertise needed:
Marketing/Media Expertise
Description:

Social media and direct behavioral cross marketing initiatives are needed to create a grassroots new media team for Nebula.

Type of expertise needed:
Management Expertise
Description:

Management of Nebula would need to understand and practice triple bottom line initiatives for social entrepreneurs.

Sustainability (financial) Model:

SN7 would be structured as a non-profit entity while Nebula will be a for-profit B Corporation. This next wave of organizations are forming a new way to do business in the community using for-profit methodologies in the social sector. Nebula’s revenue would come from user subscription fees, advertising (AdWord, AdSense, and Cost per Action), services, products, transaction fees, grants, and investors.

Identified Obstacles:

Nebula's foundation rests on open source technology and knowledge sharing.  Any potential prohibition of open source ideology due to contracted proprietary products/services by educational or other institutions would pose a serioucs obstacle to Nebula's function.   Another potential challenge would be the lack of access to internet/infrastructure/resources in certain geographies.  International locations vary widely in their availability and stability of internet technology, support, computer literacy, and training.  In order for Nebula to be effective in these areas, it must find solutions to overcome these potential barriers. Lack of information or miscommunication related to Nebula’s function poses another challenge.  Nebula must also establish "buy-in" with locally established knowledge sharing groups as a trusted means of collaboration.

Project Milestones:

Nebula was asked to present at the Pecha Kucha gathering in Washington, DC on January 8, 2009. Pecha Kucha events are in 170 cities around the world.  Nebula was asked to present in the “Pitch It” section of the We Media Game Changer Conference as one of five invitations at the University of Miami on February 24-26, 2009. There was a total 330 entries from 47 countries for the We Media and Game Changer competition.  Nebula was also one of 170 to organizations to complete all three business planning exercises for the Global Social Benefit Incubator scholarship hosted by Santa Clara University on February 26, 2009. Nebula’s has submitted a proposal to the Lien i3 Social Innovation Challenge hosted by Singapore Management University.

Type of expertise needed:
Marketing/Media Expertise
Description:

Since we are developing a very innovative concept of Local Micro-Media, we do not get assistance in terms of one who understands media-community-ICT relations.

We are making unemployed youths as media tycoons, so we reuire expertise at grassroot level also.

Sustainability (financial) Model:

Its a self sustainable model.

The growth engine lies with the local community leader (mobile Journalist).

More he involves in social activities, more he will be introduced to the prospective advertisers, more he will earn.

So the youth serves the community genuinely.

This model will work in all developing countries.

Just consider example of my country: INDIA

India has 290 Million mobile users & expect to reach 500 Million by 2010.

Now , we connect every 1000 mobile user with 1 enemployed youth.

Considering this,  we can offer self employment opportunities to more than 200,000 unemployed youths of India.

Now consider entire scope in developing countries.

Every youth earns US$ 100-200/month, How much Social Networth this project will generate.... cant imagine?...it is in Billions.

Identified Obstacles:

• Politicians see this united and amplified voice of a community as a potential threat and may destroy the model if gets loosely bound.

• The 'mentality' of unemployed youths.

Project Milestones:

July 2006: Almighty influxes idea to me. Launched Pilot project

upto July 2007 :Pilot project period

Aug 2007: Commercial Launch

ClickDiagnostics: A Micro-Entrepreneurship Based Model to Transform Healthcare Delivery through Mobile Telemedicine

Project URL:
http://clickdiagnostics.com
Short Project Overview:

ClickDiagnostics enables existing health-worker networks and micro-entrepreneurs to provide advanced medical consultation and to gather health data by connecting them to our global health servers via mobile phones.

Detailed Project Overview:

ClickDiagnostics addresses two main healthcare issues in developing countries: 1. Access to medical specialists in under-served regions; 2. Collection of real-time data for interventions in areas such as maternal mortality, cancer or AIDS.

ClickDiagnostics connects health workers on the ground, via mobile phone software, to a central server. This model enables the following essential services:
1. Allow doctors on their own time to provide consultations which can later be relayed to the patient.
2. Gather data and upload the data whenever connectivity is available.
3. Convey automatic warnings or actions to field workers.

The back-end network is an open system which enables rapid deployment of any new health-related solution (created by ClickDiagnostics or by a third party) that involves mobile phone-based data gathering/dissemination, efficient communication among health-related stakeholders and distributed, centralized human or machine processing.

ClickDiagnostics provides governments and NGOs an entire “health eco-system”, an end-to-end service chain, containing the following: 1) mobile phone software and inexpensive medical tools for local health-care agents, 2) web-based interface for remote specialists, 3) backend system for data routing, intelligent analysis, quality control and auto-flagging of health hazards, 4) network of “remote” medical specialists, and 5) service quality control through regular monitoring and supervision.

By providing the technological eco-system, we enable local clinics and even micro-entrepreneurs to disseminate the model where it is needed most, allowing market forces to determine demand and speed growth throughout the developing world.

What else have you done in this area?:

In the first year of operation, our implementations and on-going initiatives include:

1. Mobile teledermatology for clinics and rural healthworkers to consult with local and international specialists

2. Health screening of women at risk to prevent maternal and infant mortality

3. Large-scale breast cancer screening through deployed government health workers

ClickDiagnostics has teamed up with key global players in the health space such as University of Pennsylvania’s Global Health Program and MIT’s Innovations in International Health to pilot and deploy solutions in developing countries, such as Botswana, Malawi, Egypt, Ghana and Bangladesh. For local-level implementation, ClickDiagnostics has partnered up with NGOs, health ministries and local clinics in these countries. Some of ClickDiagnostics’ operations are being supported by multi-national corporations and trade associations in the telecommunications industry.

ClickDiagnostics’ potential for growth is immense both in the number of disease areas and in the number of countries that can use our platform.

Type of expertise needed:
Marketing/Media Expertise
Description:

To market the services of ClickDiagnostics to governments and NGOs in different countries.

Sustainability (financial) Model:

Our model is based on the premise that all stakeholders in the service chain should have adequate economic incentives. Our revenues come from fees paid by patient for remote specialist consultation and from NGOs and governments willing to develop a platform for gathering patient information. The sustainability of our model is hinged on being able to provide multiple services using a common platform.

Additional funds will be used to assess needs for our services in more developing countries.

Identified Obstacles:

Potential obstacles include establishing relationships with local health organizations such as clinics, hospitals, governmental ministries, NGOs, and local doctors who are needed to implement and provide services using the ClickDiagnostics platform.

Another obstacle is in securing sufficient funds to expand operations in additional regions.

Project Milestones:

May 2008: Won MIT 100K Business Plan Competition – Development Track.
May 2008: Incorporated.
June 2008: Established partnerships with government and local NGOs to pilot service in north Africa.
July 2008: Finalized partnership with Telederm/Africa and UPenn-Botswana to implement tele-dermatology service in Malawi, Botswana, and Ghana.
Oct 2008: Began partnership with local NGOs to develop maternal mortality risk assessment services and breast-cancer screening service in Bangladesh.
Nov 2008: Launched clinic-based mobile teledermatology service pilot in a major city in the developing world.

EPIC CHANGE: Story-Powered Activism

Project URL:
http://www.epicchange.org
What will change in the world because this Project happens?:

This mashup will create a storybank (i.e., database) of images & videos from various non-profits & charitable organizations that consumers/activists can personalize as eCards & eGifts and send to friends via email and social networking sites for $1 each. Here’s why this story-based tool will make an important difference in raising funds and generating awareness for many important causes:

  • Stories Matter. According to recent research by Wharton professor Deborah Small, stories are far better than statistics at generating an emotional response that inspires giving.
  • Pictures = 1,000 Words. “Fund-raising appeals do best when they are crafted around a single gripping image." (The Chronicle of Philanthropy, 7/17/07)

What else have you done in this Cause Area?:

Epic Change founders Stacey Monk and Sanjay Patel have over 15 years combined experience using creative media to inspire transformation in corporate and public sector organizations. Building on their change management & IT consulting experience they launched Epic Change, after a recent volunteer trip to Tanzania. In only 6 months since they received their 501(c)3 status, Epic Change has:

  • raised nearly $40K from 350+ donors;
  • provided $35K in loans to a primary school partner in Tanzania who used the funds to open 4 new classrooms in less than 100 days;
  • initiated development of products based on the stories, photos and artwork of the school’s students, including postcards, greeting cards & t-shirts; and
  • Received a $1000 grant from the Case Foundation for ranking in the top 5% of nearly 500 participating US-based nonprofits in America’s Giving Challenge.
