Community Living Connection (CLiC)

Challenges Entered:
CLiC will provide computer and assistive technology and internet connection free of charge to those participating in the pilot program. After initial evaluation, services will be opened to a wider group and based on fundraising addtional participants will be added as possible. Other Brain Injury Services of SWVA services are currently either free (case management) or on a sliding scale bases (life skills training). Through this project we hope to be able to offer those services to more individuals

What else have you done in this area of work?

The Jason Foundation was formed to hlep people with brain injuries and their families. In doing this, we have funded the establishment of Brain Injury Services of SWVA that aid brain injury survivors in the Southwest Virginia area. In conjunction with Brain Injury Services, and others, we are continuing to look for ways to help those with brain injuries. Our hope with this project is to be able to not only help those in rural areas of Southwest Virginia, but in other rural areas of the world as well.

We feel this project will have possibilities for many other groups as well.

Project goals:
The Community Living Connection (CLiC) addresses the need for accessible day program services for people living with brain injuries in rural areas.  Through both web-based and person-to-person interaction, this high tech - high touch approach to improving independent functioning of survivors of brain injury focuses directly on building cognitive, social, and vocational skill sets that increase quality of life and facilitate greater participation in the home and community environments. CLiC will address through computer and assistive technology, the challenges inherent in delivering comprehensive brain injury rehabilitation in a rural environment where geography and distance have traditionally limited access. Our first step is a pilot program to provide computers, internet connection and program facilitation to allow group interaction with web conferencing ability. Under the direction of the online facilitator, the program will provide structured rehabilitation services such as cognitive rehabilitation, social opportunities, structured goal setting, discussions, education, vocational skills, and to plan for meeting times for participation in community activities.A full copy of our concept paper is available upon request to:adminassist@jasonfoundation.org
Identified Obstacles:
We welcome comments from anyone having experience in group web conferencing. We are also looking for additional financial support. Our current budget is about $100,000 of which we are about $20,000 short. We plan to start the project in September and are currently setting up a trail run with non-brain injured subjects to try out the connectivity and programs.
