Bloggers are playing an increasingly important role as citizen journalists, especially in countries where the mainstream media are tightly controlled.  This places them in jeopardy, and the Blog Alert Box gives members of the blogsphere an automated channel for receiving and passing along news of endangered bloggers who need various forms of assistance, such as publicity or legal aid.  Creating an alert network raises awareness of the importance of free speech on the internet for individuals, increases a sense of community across national boundaries, and helps to support a diversity of news sources in every locale.  The CPB alert network may also serve as a pilot project for online activists of every kind who are interested in experimenting with web-based action alerts for their stakeholders.
