Keep On Keepin' On

"We've just got to keep on keepin' on" I say to my boss as we try to understand why our efforts to engage our fans and followers have flopped again and again. But a question arises in the back of my mind; what am I expecting here? To be overwhelmed with RTs and comments? To be scrambling to keep up with it all? Right now, it's a slow trickle of engagement here and there. But it seems there is a hook we haven't baited properly, no one's biting.

Some Orgs Are Just Poised for Progress

Well, I just looked at how many years I have been on Netsquared, 4 years and 24 weeks. Geez. 4 jobs later...I've landed at the International Sculpture Center. It seems that emerging professionals like myself have this experience often. Jumping jobs, whether due to burnout or lack of upwards movement, every year or so. I heard once that most nonprofit professionals under 30 change jobs about every two years.

Every Action has an Opposite and Equal Reaction

Today I googled "fear of user generated content" after a conversation with a co-worker about creating an artist registry online with social networking features. This co-worker is funded by the government and therefore has a fear deep in her heart of losing funding because of one person who decides to post something inappropriate. Can anybody suggest some examples of government funded organizations sanctioning user generated content? Can anybody help me sooth her troubled mind?

Re Post: Can FriendFeed Help the Arts Community?

My organization, jerseyarts.com, is a nonprofit program cosponsored by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and ArtsPride NJ. Our mission is generally to increase the awareness and participation in the arts in NJ, more specifically to make it easier for the field to get their message to the people of NJ.

I just got hired as the Marketing and Communication Associate mostly I think because of my history of following the nptech conversation over the years and trying my best to stay ahead of the curve. Alas, I feel as if I am falling behind. The internet age seemingly makes young people old before their time.

Could Friendfeed and Tagging Help the Arts Community?

It seems like the internet is evolving to match it's ever growing potential as a processor of knowledge, opinion, information all tailored to the individual. And it seems the the way to do all this is by aggregating feeds. I'm a web designer of sorts and wish sometimes there was a Karin feed that would tell people everything I was accomplishing online. But alas, that is harder than it sounds. But Friendfeed comes close for sure.

But, enough about me, lets talk about my cause. My question is this, we have a lot of content in our organization's calendar and changing content online. We use facebook and flickr and will be using youtube. We also are thinking about a blog page. Is friend feed the answer? Could it be?

New Job (Again) - Even More Opportunities

Hi all, yet again I have changed jobs, but never forgotten Net Squared in my many moves to different organizations. I'm now at Discover Jersey Arts, a cosponsored program of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and ArtsPrideNJ. It is a great organization, ready for the social web revolution (finally I'm at a job where they are prepared for this stuff and actually want to integrate these tools into their campaigns!) I'm happy as a kid in a candy store!

New Job...New Opportunities

Hi all! I haven't written in a year! Mostly because I was inbetween jobs. But, I have just started a new job at the Monmouth County Arts Council in New Jersey. I'm the new communication director and have come in at a great time. The organization is looking to redesign their website and I'm going to be a big part of that effort. I'm extreemly excited and am formulating ideas, I would love some feedback, check out what we have at www.monmouthartscouncil.org. it's very web 1.0 and I'd like to make it as dynamic as possible. What tools are practical for an arts organization like ours?

OK, I think I need some help on this!

OK, I've spent some time on this today and come up with a hodge podge of framented thoughts about how a blog would be PERFECT for my organization, but I'm still worried the people I need to reach won't get what I get. We have great programming that could translate well into a blog, I just have to figure out how to get these people to get as excited about this as I am, and thats hard because they aren't nearly as 'into it' as I am. They're going to need some convincing. So, I'm asking for some help from whoever's out there and knows some tips about this, how do you transform a completely offline organization into an organization with an online presence and how do you convince offline people to want to get online?

Puffin's Mission...

I thought it might be a good idea to post our mission statement...

The Puffin Cultural Forum, a project of the Puffin Foundation, Ltd. is a gallery performance space located in Teaneck New Jersey. For over seven years, we have strived to bring thoughtful, socially-relevant, provocative, and culturally diverse arts programming to Bergen County and northern New Jeresy. We support public schools and community institutions, offering free arts workshops, guided gallery tours, and theater and other cultural presentations. Located in perhaps the most culturally diverse region of the US, we seek to create an environment where the arts are celebrated as expressions of the best of our humanity, and as catalysts for the achievement of human rights for all

Organizing online or in the community?

I just got back from entertaining a highschool class. Their class was documentary for social change. My boss did most of the talking, but I was able to see the potential of this kind of thing. The kids were very into it, it seemed. I also realized that my contribution to this place is more technical than anything else. I always seem to come up with something to do with the web. Maybe I am missing out on working towards things like this. Organize in the community or online? I'm only one person so doing both is hard. Of coarse after it was over I said to my boss "I'll make up a website people can go to to learn about our educational programs".
