GoSomething: Go Somewhere, Do Something

The Action Platform for Contributive Travel: Helping Engaged Travelers Do It!

We at GoSomething are extremely excited to share with all of you at N2Y3!  We’ve been working hard with the Dreamfish team to get our new web presence up, but it'll take us a little longer. Meanwhile, find out more at www.GoSomething.org. GoSomething is a (real!) community built of tools that help travelers contribute to their destinations as a means of making travel more meaningful.

What differentiates GoSomething:

1. the idea is not to travel somewhere to volunteer. the idea is that if you’re going somewhere, you should contribute something locally – time, goods, skills.

2. the traveler should do what the traveler is passionate about: could be your work skill, could be your hobby. Chances are, that's a lot more useful than you handling a shovel.

3. this is not North-South: GoSomething is deeply committed to the breakdown of the North-South framework – everyone has something he or she can contribute.  Each traveler is a repository ; limiting contributive travel to the Westerner’s vacation in sub-Saharan Africa is antithetical to the vision.

The issue we address and would like you to explore with us:

most people agree with this vision, yet many don’t end up contributing.  We think this is because of actual or perceived obstacles, so GoSomething has developed tools to help remove those obstacles.  Please help us find more tools, tech or otherwise, to help people contribute while traveling!

Tools we have used so far:

  • provide information and make travelers talk among themselves and with communities and projects
  • connect travelers with existing projects
  • endorse travelers’ projects and help them practically get what they need
  • What Are You Going And Doing?
