Quick jots from session 1

  • When you solve a problem for the most vulnerable, you end up solving it for everyone. (Curb cutouts were designed for people with diabilities, but everytime to wheel your luggage, or push a stroller, or ride a bike, you realize the benefits of this design.)
  • Frame digital divide in terms that lead with real people, and a sense of social justice--don't lead with technology.
  • First we invent our technologies, then we use our technolgies to reinvent ourselves
  • Katrina, SARS response, Wikipedia.
  • Much can be learned from the tradition in many native american communities that the next generation must be taken into consideration in every major decision you make.
  • An audience participant asked, "Has our always connected culture just made us more vulnerable to surveillance?" Howard Rheingold points at that many people distrust flucuates depending on whether or not their part is in power.  We need an anti-survellance activists to drive home the point that you must not decide these issues based on trust of the current gov't but of the gov't 10-15 years down the road.
