I finally set myself up on the personalized Internet radio station, Pandora, and I LOVE it.
I'm wondering, is there a way that something this awesome could be used to help nonprofits, especially ones that support the arts?
The thought must be in the air because recently Lucy Bernholz of Philanthropy 2173 wrote a post, Pandora, Pop Culture and Philanthropy. In it she says,
"someone out there is either building or thinking about building an 'Amazon-style' recommendation service that draws from the Guidestar database - 'People who gave to the Red Cross also gave to WritersCorps.'"
The Give and Take post, If You Give to Save the Children, You Might Also Try Contributing to ... comments on Bernholz's post and asks its readers, "What do you think of a recommendation site for charitable giving?"
In addition to building a site that is Pandora-like for nonprofits, is there some way that the actual service Pandora provides could serve nonprofits? For example, what if there was a way for all of the supporters of a symphony, or an alternative music venue, or a music in the schools program to find each other on Pandora and share stations in the same way that you can share your Pandora music with your Facebook friends.
Maybe I'm stretching here, but I think this is such a cool service, there has to be a way to leverage its awesomeness to help organizations in general, and organizations that support music and the arts in particular.

Pandora and Philanthropy
Hey Britt -
Lucia here, from Pandora.
You've got some interesting thoughts, and I'm glad you're enjoying Pandora!
I do know that teachers use Pandora stations and our musicology podcasts (http://pandora.com/podcast) to educate students. And indie musicans are making better livings via their exposure on Pandora, which a great source of pride for us.
Just wanted to let you know of a few of the philanthropic works Pandora is involved in as well...
- We have donated over 6,000 CDs to the Oakland Public Library.
- We raise money for music eductation through GlobalGiving. http://www.pandora.com/static/philanthropy.shtml
- Pandora staff volunteer monthly at a local Oakland school that doesn't have music education. We teach music theory and by the end of the year, even have them hooked up in a mini recording studio, burning them CDs of the songs they created. http://www.flickr.com/photos/pandora_radio/sets/72157604974247415/
We're really proud of the good things we can and will do to bring more music into the world! Email me any time with ideas (or questions). (Lucia at pandora dot com)
Cheers,
Lucia Willow, Pandora Community Manager
