Last month Marci Bossow Schankweiler posted an idea for a home for cancer patients near Orlando, FL on Ideablob. Schankweiler is the President and founder of Crossing the Finish Line, a nonprofit organization that provides young adult cancer patients and their families with a break from treatment with a one-week expense paid "excursion." The Ideablob community chose her idea as the month's best, and she won $10,000 to start her project, funded by Advanta, a small business credit card company.
Do you have an idea for how to use the social web for social change? Why not submit it to Ideablob? It doesn't look like it takes much time. For example, here is an idea posted by "APWorkingMom" to create a website about the rewards of regular giving:
Idea Description
3 years ago, my family and I committed to allocating 1% of our take home pay as donation money. I realize 1% isn't much, but even just giving this small amount has had a profound impact on how we think about our money. I'd like to create a website and/or community to tell our story, give others a place to tell theirs and provide helpful resources about how people can incorporate giving into their lives, regardless of their circumstances.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
Complete my business plan and start looking for a web design/development agency to help flush out my online vision. I have money of my own set aside for this project, and another $10K would be enough to take some first steps.
Potential Challenges
1. I'd love input about what type of format would best suit my vision. An informational website? A blog? A community? I'm web 2.0 ignorant, so pros and cons of a more interactive site would be very helpful.
2. Name my website! What URL would you use for this site?
If you look at her submission, you can see comments by the community about the project in the righthand column, the number of views, its ranking, and other ideas she has submitted or commented on.
People can also ask for advice from the community for their ideas. For example, APWorkingMom's challenges, listed above, can be commented on in the advice section.
The folks from Ideablob asked me to let you all know that they are open to nonprofit, as well as business ideas, so send 'em on in!
