billyb: ok, it looks like we're on...
first a quick intro:
i'm billyb (billy bicket)
I'm working on netsquared w/ a small team of folks from a technology organization called TechSoup http://www.techsoup.org
gabber575 has joined.
billyb: I'll be answering any questions folks have about the project guidelines, or application process
if i can't answer your question, here. i'll fup over email, or am happy to speak w/ you over skype at a later time. my skype name is (billybicket)
Sent at 12:02 pm on Saturday.
gabber575: Hi Billy, and everyone. This is Sandra Dickinson.
gabber886: Hi, billyb. Glauco here. We've invited friends to comment on our project (Throngz) but haven't heard from any NetSquared community members. We could use some constructive criticism. Will all the projects eventually get feedback?
billyb: HI Glauco!
I can't promise you that all of the projects will get feedback (I mean, we can walk a horse to water, but... -- you know what i mean?
gabber360: How serious are the word limits. I tried to stay within these limits for my first shot at the proposal, but have been getting carried away as our team tries to share more of our concept.
gabber166: I am here to michale gibbons, new project posted last night buttons of hope
billyb: but, we are working hard at encouraging the project applicants to draw energy from their supporters w/ feedback
360: word limits are just guidelines
like guidelines, they're meant to help people stay focused
gabber886: Did last year's NetSquared conference have the same format? If so, how are those projects faring, and where can we read about them?
billyb: if you're exceeding word-limits, i'd connect w/ a writerly-type, and ask for editing support!
886: new format this year
166: welcome, michale!
LeoRomero: Billy, Will the voting be done by existing members of the net2 community, or are we expected to ask members of the NewsTrust community to sign onto net2 and vote for our project? We want to win an award, but not game the process.
billyb: 166: goodluck
leo
i think i got back to you over email
we encourage you to invite your community to register at net2
and vote for your project!
LeoRomero: didn't get it, sorry; my email must have eaten your email.
billyb: yes, it's an open process...and no, you're not gaming the system
thanks for the integrity:)
gabber886: Will the $100K tech fund be split evenly between the winning projects?
gabber360: how is the voting process set up? Will voters initially see only the summaries and can dig deeper if they like??
LeoRomero: is it just # of votes that matters?
billyb: 886: 100k won't be split up perfectly evenly
still figuring out most equitable way to divide funds, but let me say that 1st, 2d and 3d projects will get a larger share of the pot.
360: re voting process: we're using a drupal module that will enable people to vote on (3) favorite projects
we're also building voter guidelines (as we speak), to lay out all projects in a way that is easy on the eyes, and fair for all project applicants
360: voting booklet will only include short summaries, w/ links to full applications, blogs, videologs, podcasts, whatever you can do to illustrate your story
leo: here's how it's going down. on 4/9, voting begins (open for the entire world to winnow all projects on n2 site down to ~20 projects which will be invited to n2 conference)
at n2 conference, conf participants will vote on the 20 projects
top 3 will get a larger share of the funding
all projects will receive some $
gabber886: Will we have a say about what goes into the voting booklet for our project?
gabber360: will the conference focus almost exclusively around these 20 projects, or is that one component of a much larger agenda??
billyb: and clear ways to engage w/ conf participants
886: would love your feedback about what goes into voter guidelines
LeoRomero: thanks. i'm guessing that voters will have to register. how long will the voting process take? (so I caninform our members).
billyb: in fact, i'm happy to send anyone interested the first draft, so you have an opportunity to weigh-in with your bright ideas about how to build
pls send me an email: billy@compumentor.org if you're interested in lending a hand
gabber520 has joined.
billyb: leo: yes, voters have to reg
how long will the process take: very quick and easy to reg at n2
voting will also be super-easy on users (less than 1 minute)
gabber166: will winners make a presentation at the conference?
billyb: basically, we're expecting voters to land on the voting page with a clear understanding of who they are casting vote/s for
166: great q
yes!
gabber575: how long presentation?
billyb: we're working on conf format w/ our advocates (see n2 site for advocates page)
gabber886: I'd be happy to help with the draft. Also, can you send us a transcript of this chat?
gabber520 has left.
billyb: 575: don't have particulars nailed down yet, but we reckon <5 minutes per presentation
w/ expecation of multiple presentations throughout the day
don't hold me to (5 minute) quote
LeoRomero: 575: Hi Sandra. Did you see our answers to your questions re the NewsTrust proposal?
gabber575: yes that's waht I like best about this whole process
billyb: i can only promise you that w/ 20 projects and, from what we're projecting -- 3 conference tracks -- we don't have much time over 2 days to present for a long period of time
575: what do you like best about the whole process?
actually, i'd love to get a sense of whether this is relatively easy for you all.
gabber575: the chance we have to communicate with other project proposers
gabber166: can you point us to some past winners, was roomtoread.org a past winner?
billyb: we're doing our best to not make this a time-sink for applicants
yet, we also want to ensure a certain level of quality submissions (as i'm sure you understand)
no past winners, 166
this is brand spanking new event format!
gabber166: whoa...
gabber886: Will there really be SVCs at the conference? Have any expressed interest in attending?
LeoRomero: the process to apply is easy, but I wish there were any easier way to assess the other projects - like maybe an at-a-glance table or something,
billyb: svc's?
venture capitalists are following along, yes
gabber886: social venture capitalists
billyb: ah
well
'social', as you know, is a charged term
people who invest in projects/businesses/
technology-centric projects/businesses, yes
575: i missed your q: hmmm...great q
any bright ideas about how we can facilitate you connecting with other project proposers? I mean, comments are open for all blog entries, and applications...if you wanna talk to somebody, i'd encourage you to comment on their application, or blog
gabber360: feedback on process: I enjoyed it and keep enjoying it as my team and peers read the proposal and send us suggestions. I was happy that you started with recommended
billyb: leo: assessing other porjects is THE challenge we're up against at the moment
we recognize people aren't going to read through 100 proposals
gabber575: i have -commented on other proposals extensively and invited comments back
gabber360: started with recommended word limits but allow us to expand from that base.
billyb: but, we're hoping the voter guidelines, and the project applicants themselves, work hard at differentiating their work from the pack
gabber575: I am discovering some projects who have visions and obstacles in common with my own
billyb: 360: great to hear
gabber575: would love for us with common vision/common obstacle to have a place to get together and get beter
billyb: 360: trust that we believe in this process of iterative design
that's the beauty of the web (as far as i'm concerned:))
575: common space for projects like yours -- great point.
gabber886: I think you've developed a good process. It's been painless. I assume your judges will read through all the proposals?
gabber575: the way we "tag" our projects is one way we can tell who each other is
billyb: let me bookmark this idea and see what we can come up w/. in the meantime, send me what your thinking/perfect scenario-space (wiki? what kind of tools are you thinking we could make available for you and your kin?)
LeoRomero: i'm a wikier, mainly
billyb: righton
gabber575: i've been trying to use my own n2 blog as a place
billyb: your own n2 blog is a great place for that
also, net tuesday's (meetups)
are a good place to convene w/ locals
if you have locals working on similar stuff
gabber360 has left.
billyb: and, of course, you're encouraged to setup gabbly chats like this
for you all to chat about the possibilities
gabber575: chat is cool
billyb: i mean, we want to enable you all...we don't have all the answers...we're just trying to convene the resources, and let you all kick arse
so to speak
gabber610 has left.
billyb: what else are y'all thinking?
gabber575: i'm looking beyond the funding to our project's success in the real world anyway - this is a great community
billyb: righton 575
LeoRomero: thanks a lot billy, all, good to speak to you
gabber166: billy overall (if there is such a thing) what is the vibe at N2 for the projects so far -- some great ideas -- everyone seems pretty serious though? thoughts?
billyb: it is a great community, and we're super-stoked that it's very real, and growing. net tuesday's started in sf, ca 1 year ago, and now, at least 5 groups in 5 cities are meeting up about this geeky/worldchanging stuff
gabber575: so waht is the best way to commuicate to other common projects that we have set up a net tuesday or a chat?
billyb: righton leo!
have a good weekend
gabber886: Good q, 166'
billyb: 166: very, very enthusiastic support at n2, and from our funders
gabber166: not that this isn't serious biz....
billyb: 'pretty serious, though' -- i'm not following you on that one
how so?
gabber708 has joined.
gabber708 is now BrittBravo
billyb: hi britt bravo
BrittBravo: Hi all, just stopping by quickly to say hi.
LeoRomero: hi britt
gabber886: Hi,
billyb: leo, where do you live?
LeoRomero: san jose ca
BrittBravo: It would be great if folks put their name in rather than being anonymous (:
billyb: ok
cool
you should check out a sf net tues sometime
or, start your own in sjose:)
gabber166 has logged in as michaelgibbons.
LeoRomero: been to two, hoping to make the next one
gabber575: 575=SandraDickisnon
michaelgibbons has left.
BrittBravo: Leo was a super duper photographer at the Net Tuesday with WiserEarth and LinkedIn
billyb: cool
LeoRomero: need my cam for change.org?
BrittBravo: that would be great!
billyb: i'm sure we'll meet again
gabber575: are net tuesdays only physical gatherings?
BrittBravo: Ok, I'm going to sign off, just wanted to check in and see how things were going.
LeoRomero: then i guess i show up :)
michaelgibbons has joined.
BrittBravo has left.
gabber886: thanks for all your help. signing off.
michaelgibbons: back ...whew went in to gabbly time warp for minute
gabber886 has left.
michaelgibbons has left.
billyb: later, britt!
well...questions, ideas, somebody....
we've got 29 minutes...
gabber575: again-are net tuesdays only physical gatherings?
michaelgibbons has joined.
billyb: net tuesdays are f2f gatherings,yes 575
gabber575: nay similar web gathering ?
michaelgibbons: what will the conference be like?
billyb: michael: conference is going to be a first-of-it's kind event
LeoRomero: billy, gina c and i were thinking about doing sj net tuesdays. both of us have been very busy though. we should probably talk again.
michaelgibbons: is there a speaker list? yet
billyb: where 350 participants
focus energies on the 20 kick-ass n2 projects
no speaker list, yet
not many speakers
just a handful (or so)
we want to focus on developing projects during the 2-days w/ the resources in the room
michaelgibbons: Billy mentioned earlier only short presents 20X5 = 100 minutes --is the rest a kind of workshop atmosphere?
I mean what your saying sounds pretty amaZing
michaelgibbons has left.
michaelgibbons has joined.
gabber575: I have noticed that the 'visual editor' features available for proposal edit are less than what was available when I first entered my proposal. why?
michaelgibbons: sorry keep egtting booted?/
i am not seeing chat posts? do you see mine?
LeoRomero: i'm still here, i think
billyb: 575: don't have an answer for you on that one
gabber575: also noticed that now only project summary is first thing folks see; used to be truncated version of vision/social impact plus summary. why?
billyb: you can email gina gina@compumentor.org for an answer there (pls cc: me) billy@compumentor.org
michael: it should be really interesting and engaging
gabber575: since things seem to be in flux, do you have a sense of exactly what folks will see whn voting time comes around?
billyb: people seem really jazzed about having an opportunity to 'chip in' -- so to speak
575: things are always in flux
it's the only constant
gabber575: i know
just trying to keep up
billyb: 575: i encourage you to spur community support around your work! ckout britt bravo's blog for tips http://www.netsquared.org/blog/britt-bravo
575: i'm just trying to keep up, too:)
michaelgibbons: billy curious is seth godin / squidoo involved with this in any manner? know there is n2 widget on squidoo?
Sent at 12:40 pm on Saturday.
billyb: seth and crew seem to dig what we're doing, yes
gabber575: what was the LinkedIn thing you mentioned a while ago?
michaelgibbons: not surprised!
billyb: 575: what linkedin thing?
gabber575: well Brit metnioned it, wi/Leo as photograhper
billyb: ah
unfort, britt bailed
gabber575: ok
LeoRomero: that was a net2 event last month
billyb: 575: what's your name?
gabber575: Sandra Dickinson
billyb: ah!
hi, sandra
you can change your # to your name (just above the field you type in)
on gabbly
LeoRomero: billy, does this gabbly thing cost anything?
billyb: negative, leo
totally free
the beauty of web services
LeoRomero: sweet
billyb: innovation and will is what we need....
gabber575: so if I want to set up a gabbly chat for projects with things in common, what process?
michaelgibbons: Billy how many are on the group of N2 people who will review projects -- does that group include all the sponsors?
billyb: the economics of this whole social change field is changing dramatically w/ this shift
imho
sandra, check out how to use gabbly on gabbly's site
what process are you referring to?
gabber575: so I'd just set it up on gabbly andthen communicate on n2?
LeoRomero: indeed it is, and it great that net2/techsoup/compumentor play such pivotal roles
gabber360: testing 1-2-3
billyb: all you need to do is contact the people you want to connect w/ via chatg
then set upa a gabbly chat
on gabbly
and add the gabbly feature to your blog, or anywhere on the web
360, welcome!
i'm billyb
what's yourname?
michaelgibbons: billy lets say someone has a killer project but no friends :( few votes - would he stand a chance to mae the top 20?
make
billyb: michael: you betcha
we're working hard at leveling the playing field at n2
gabber360 has left.
michaelgibbons: by the way that wasn't about me....see a friend of mine...... haha
billyb: our editors are going to be engaging our advocates to identify those projects that don't seem to have communities built around themn yet....
no prob, mg
and advos, will be speaking about those projects on n2, thereby bubbling up support for them
LeoRomero: that's cool. but look at projects that have some community, too, ok?
michaelgibbons: dry humor doesn't translate well in chat :):)
billyb: you betcha! actually, the community will be looking at those already...i think our job is going to be to help ensure those projects without communities aren't left out
gabber575: that's one thing i've been sad about - I've been commenting on other projects, but no one commented on mine
billyb: 575: i feel the same way, most days
i ask people questions about how they feel all the time
gabber575: so is it something i said?
billyb: :)(
i wouldn't stress about it, sandra
gabber575: just kidding - i really want to engage the n2 community
billyb: i'd just be straightforward
and hope for the best
gabber575: iam but don't want to be "pushy"
michaelgibbons: Billy will the vote tally be posted? would suppose not
billyb: well...there's that
but, i think you can make your point without annoying anybody
LeoRomero: Sandra, I appreciated your questions/comments, and will make the time to go over your proposal. :)
billyb: gentle prodding:)
gabber575: love you leo
billyb: mg: totals...dunno, yet. good q
LeoRomero: ditto :)
billyb: will add that one to the list
hope gabbly saves this transcript
gabber575: yeah transcript? how to get/
LeoRomero: i've copied in pasted, in case it doesnt
billyb: dunno
cool!
thanks, leo
anything else y'all thinking about?

billyb: you betcha, sandra!
LeoRomero: gotta go, will email you the text i have billy. have a great weekend and thanks y'all!
billyb: thanks, leo!

michaelgibbons: thanks all....
gabber575: its warm but rainy here in OH
billyb: how warm?
gabber575: 65 (you might not think that's warm)
billyb: ah...that sounds pleasant
i think it's about that here, too
