At a Meetup for SF WorldChanging bloggers last night, Worldchanging's publisher, Leif Utne, told us about an amazing project being launched by the Natural Capital Institute, WISER (World Index for Social and Environmental Responsibility)
From the Natural Capital web site:
WISER’s open source platform creates the space for the private sector, civil society, and government to collaboratively address and solve social and environmental problems. This powerful tool for social change, that combines the accurate and efficient search capabilities of a relational database with real-time community editing features, is at the core of the sites WiserEarth—connecting social and environmentally focused non-profits worldwide, and WiserBusiness—guiding companies of all sizes toward responsible business practices.
The most exciting component of WISER is WiserCommons:
a community driven effort to create a means for all organizations to share information. Currently, groups post information, resources, and calendars to individual websites, and often this information cannot be freely and easily exchanged. WiserCommons is a member-centric, control-free zone of activity in which members agree to cooperate in the creation of public goods to be freely used by all members of society. WiserCommons will establish cooperation agreements and protocols so that the work done by one organization/website can be easily and in some cases automatically repurposed by another. This represents a pooling of resources, precisely the activity WISER hopes to foment. NCI will act as fiscal sponsor for WiserCommons and will supply the tools for it to succeed. NCI and Interra have spearheaded this effort together and will continue to do so until it has the necessary infrastructure to be run by its members.

How cool is that.
