Heating Up NonProfits in the Arctic

Browsing the web for news, I came across this story about charities in the UK:

http://www.itpro.co.uk/news/108014/charities-told-to-use-web-better.html

It comes from a conference sponsored by British non-profiteers. Notable quotes include:

"We are entering an age of participative media where anybody with access to a computer has the potential to contribute in a unique and valuable way," Dame Suzi Leather, chair of the Charity Commission. "The challenge for charities is to harness this potential and channel it into genuine social change and community action on the ground."

It seems like across the pond they've got the same ideas as NetSquared and Cauzoo: Charity is social, and the web is the new party.

They use the Arctic Monkeys (a popular band) as a starting point. What might be more appropriate for US charities to understand the power of online fame? Sadly, Paris Hilton is the first person to come to mind...

Any better ideas to get across the vitality of internet campaigns for US charities?

Participation (kind of...)

Hi Phil... this event was organised by the Charity Commission - a quango here in the UK. I didn't know about it until today, unfortunately (and I'm not alone among my network peers). Shame.

By the way, I'm trying to get in touch with you via email. Can you contact me via www.nfp2.co.uk please :)

Quango

Ah, as I was typing I knew that Quango was the appropriate term (thanks Poli Sci 103), but didn't ressurect the knowledge in time. Seems like an interesting conference.

Also, I'll make sure to bookmark your site.

Not Knowing

Steve, not knowing in the UK is so widespread, one is inclined to think it's organised that way!

Accidentally on purpose...

Well, maybe that's too unkind!

I've asked them to send me the report of the event (there will be one I'm told), and will post it / link to it / blog about it as appropriate.

Steve

It takes great endurance

Sorry Steve, I should have explained, I run a UK social enterprise and trying to engage with the rest of the community takes much of my time. We have a lot of advocacies, but few respond to being contacted. Last week there was a very affordable local training course, it almost passed unnoticed but when it came to it, 5 days out of doing SE wasn't feasible.
