Net Tuesdays or Net2 Local gatherings provide a chance to connect locally with all those interested in the intersection of social technologies and social change. There are new groups forming every week: Join in!
The net2thinktank question about non-profits on Flickr is what brought me here... but now that I'm all registered and logged on, I'm drawing a blank. The truth is, non-profits are doing lots of great things with Twitter, some of which are truly impressive.
My NPO has only begun to scratch the surface of social media. We have a Flickr account. We have a few pics up, some different versions of our logo. One on the main reasons we created a Flickr account was to put information out there for the local media to access when they want to feature us in a story. Thus far they've had to contact us for pictures, and since we haven't had many good pictures on hand anyway, we've missed out on some potentially great coverage.
So the plan was (is): make a conscious effort to get out from behind our desks and take great blood drive pictures, then post them to Flickr. All the great stock photos a reporter could want, right there at his fingertips. We're just getting it built up right now. Haven't shared anything yet. We're getting there.
But is there more to do with our Flickr account? Of course. But what? We have a promotion coming up with an airline, for example. During the months of October and November, donate blood and you could win airline tickets. So my idea was to invite our current blood donors to take pics of themselves in their Blood Center shirts while on vacation, and share them with us for Flickr. Cute? Sure. But is it enough? I know we can do more.
Other thoughts: have blood recipients share pics from big milestones in their lives - birthdays, weddings, birth of kids and grandkids; the petition thing with signs, with people holding up signs saying why they donate blood; maybe a "my phlebotomist" thing where donors can take pics with the people who conduct their donations.
Like I said, we're getting there.
