Hi, I'm Jennifer Schlegel. I've been working back behind the curtain of this entire Net2 production, hoping we press enough of the right buttons to help make it all come together for you.
Netsquared has returned to Austin for the SXSW Interactive Festival-- and this year we're hosting a panel. It's called "NPO 2.0: Widgets for Good Challenge," and it features Silona Bonewald (http://assistorg.org/), Zack Rosen (http://civicspacelabs.org/, http://chapterthreellc.com/)and Rosalyn Lemieux (http://neworganizing.com/). If you happen to be here, too, join us at our panel on Monday, March 12 from 5-6 pm.
Would anyone like to gather for an informal Net2 meet up directly after the session...?
If I'm not posting here or on the sxsw site, you can find me on twitter at http://twitter.com/jenschlegel
As a further testament to the online community that TechSoup is building in Second Life (if you already have an acct., go directly to the site: http://tinyurl.com/ogbpd), Suzanne Vega gave a live interview and performance last night in this growing virtual world. Read lots more about it on New World Notes and see some video highlights (that I co-edited in my very first virtual world project- it is rudimentary). I hope to post more projects like this from the TechSoup /NetSquared Community.
Whether a fan or not, it really doesn’t matter. This is notable because it was broadcast on PRI's (Public Radio International) program, Infinite Mind. They're the first national broadcaster to set up shop here, and they plan to host regularly from Second Life (they also provide lots of content to NPR-affiliate stations). It seems significant that not only are they the first, but that they’re primarily publicly-funded and not a major private media corporation. They produce several tech-related programs and, maybe since they are one themselves, also have some tendency to cover NPO issues. And while it wasn't a perfect production, they were willing to go with the flow, take the risk and just put it out there.
Sounds like TechSoup may soon be helping to instruct other NPOs on how to use these powerful virtual media tools (perhaps even in partnership with fellow nonprofit, PRI?). So many possibilities…

Again, thanks to LinkTV for their tireless video coverage of the event. <
At ForaTv, more video now available online: Ethan Zuckerman’s segment from the NetSquared Conference Session: A Voice in the Wilderness to the Wisdom of Crowds: Citizen Journalism, Nonprofit Organizations and Social Change (coverage provided by Link TV). Last week we posted Dan Gillmor’s segment, also from this session. If you go to ForaTv and type in “netsquared” next to the Search function in the top menu bar, you’ll find this session and the others listed here in the archive:
Many of you have been asking about the availability of the video that was recorded at the NetSquared Conference by Link TV …so we’re happy to report: one partial and two complete sessions are up now. Here’s Dan Gillmor’s segment from the session: A Voice in the Wilderness to the Wisdom of Crowds: Citizen Journalism, Nonprofit Organizations and Social Change. You can go to www.fora.tv and search for "netsquared" under the Search button in the top nav bar tab, where you’ll also find Making the Most of Disruption featuring Paul Saffo, Howard Rheingold, and Lucy Bernholz; and Grassroots, Netroots, and the End and Beginning of Politics featuring Amy Goodman Joan Blades and Micah Sifrey. Registration is required to use the ForaTv site, and you will need to log-in to view the programs.
Video coverage of the conference sessions and speaker interviews was conducted by Link TV in collaboration with NetSquared. The 32 hours of conference footage will be edited over the next weeks, and these sessions and segments will be made available through Fora TV and the NetSquared Website. Excerpts will also be used for a Link TV documentary that will air later this year.
On Boingboing:
My NPR News colleague Stacy Bond shares word that San Francisco-based AudioLuxe will be holding another podcasting workshop this weekend. Some blogosphere pals attended the last edition, and all the reviews I heard came back enthusiastically positive. Stacy 'splains:
We're holding another Content Crash Course this weekend, April 22nd and 23rd. We’re doing them monthly now. This time around, Tom Krymkowski – a stellar mixing engineer who works on a couple of rather well-known SF podcasts and travels around the country with NPR’s Next Generation Radio – will handle the technical side of the class; he’ll cover things like setting up a mix and choosing a good mic.
As usual, I’ll cover the content stuff: writing for the ear, booking hot guests, streamlining the production process and so on.

From the New World Notes blog, take a look at how libraries are now using Secondlife:
Friday, April 21, 8:00AM - 9:00AM: Getting Along with IT staff for Librarians and Educators. Rain Noonan hosts this unique event, featuring an appearance by the ITS Director of the Kansas City Public Library. "This session covers the basics of how to jump communication hurdles between techies and non-technical staff," Noonan posts. "For VOIP, go to http://67.19.231.218/v4/login.asp?r=67955673&p=0
type your name and click enter. Minimize window. If you do not have a microphone, you can ask questions via text chat." Part of the Librarian's Continuing Education Seminar Series, from the Johnson County Library.
To add to Britt's earlier post about Joi Ito joining the board of WITNESS, he's also embarking on a cool project to loan out plots of land (on his island) to nonprofits and their related events in Secondlife, a 3-D online world with more than 160,000 "residents" from all over the globe. To get involved, you'll likely need a Secondlife account, which is free (it's the virtual real estate that costs).
Today this post comes to you courtesy of the email center in the middle of the tradeshow floor here at SXSW. It's Day 3-- and the weather is cooling just a bit before our last day tomorrow. Though "cool" is definitely a relative term, considering I read something about yesterday about SNOW in the Bay Area...
Last night I had the pleasure of meeting another member of the Net2 Community-- web consultant, Alexandra (many of you know her as "Alex") Samuel. We all gathered, in web 2.0 appropriateness, at the Yahoo!, Delicious, Flickr party at the Iron Cactus, an Austin staple on 6th St. Billy, Marshall, Alex and I enjoyed the open vibe and the open air of the 2nd floor patio.
