Firefox/XUL Developer Wanted For KnowMore Firefox Extension – N2Y3 Featured Project – With Mockups

The KnowMore.org Firefox Extension is currently seeking a volunteer Firefox extension developer to help us develop a beta in time for the NetSquared Conference (May 27-28th).

Our extension will help you make informed purchases online by alerting you when you visit the websites of companies that are endangering our planet and/or threatening the quality of life of people and communities around the world.

We already have the basic data – KnowMore.org is a growing wiki directory of 200+ company profiles with thousands of editors. Now we need help mashing that data into the browsing experience -- where we think it could have a huge potential for social change!

This is the full screenshot of how we envision pulling the issue summaries into the browser when you visit AmericanApparel.net:

The end-user can click “Learn More” to be re-directed to the full KnowMore profile for American Apparel. We also respect the end-user's browsing experience by providing an “X” out button and a check box to never see the KnowMore warning again for that website.

We also plan on integrating KnowMore's icons into search results:

KnowMore has a set of five symbols that make it easy to get a snapshot of a company's information. These symbols represent Worker's Rights, Human Rights, Political Influence, Environmental Issues, and Business Ethics. If applicable, you'll also have the option of clicking any of the icons to be re-directed to that specific section of the company's profile on KnowMore.

These are the two main feature sets we would like to build out by the end of May – but we need a firefox extension developer to help us get there! If you are interested in collaborating on this project, please email me at joe@engagejoe.com.

Also feedback and comments are super appreciated!

Thanks a lot -- I look forward to hearing from you soon!

- Joe

PS - Much thanks to Danny Brown for helping to create the mockups!

You could probably get a lot of code from

You could probably borrow heavily from this addon.

Love it.

joe - somehow i missed your project in my initial review of the entrants. it's wonderful.

in my recent book (Mobilizng Generation 2.0), i wrote a lot about the problems with applications like FishInfo - where you text in to get sustainability info about fish when at the fish market. The problem is that you have to remember to text when you're at the market.

Your app neatly works around this problem - in the web browsing scenario. What if you expanded it (some day) to comprise physical locations? You can start by mapping particularly egregious offenders in large cities - and when someone who has the app installed on their phone gets within 10feet of said location, the app lights up and gives them a short message about the offender.

The main feature i'd want on the app is to be able to select my database of responsibility. I may find myself aligned with one more than another.
