My 10 Favorite Mashup Projects - NetSquared Mashup Challenge
Hi! My name's Joe Solomon and I submitted the KnowMore.org Firefox Extension mashup. What if your favorite clothing store used child labor? Or what if your local office supply store got their paper pulp from endangered rainforests? Once we build (and once you install) our Firefox extension, we will alert you to these issues (and others) whenever you go and visit these company's websites!
Also, I just finished browsing all of the other 121 mashups and after much internal debate have compiled a list of what I think are the best 10 projects. I believe these projects are highly innovative and have great potential for harnessing the power of the social web to raise awareness about vital issues. In no particular order:
"...a geographic visualization of the university apparel supply chain could be invaluable to activists and independent factory monitors alike. It could show where factories are in the world, which retailers contract those factories and which universities license those retailers...."
"Our goal is to provide a simple environmental score for most products sold in major retail outlets across the US online and offline. We are bringing this score to the point of sale when and where people make purchasing decisions."
"Metavid makes legislative video more accessible so people can keep tabs on their representatives. We capture the full days proceedings and make full stream URLs accessible/embeddable/downloadable. This brings primary source legislative video footage into online political dialog."
"Mapping Money and Politics is a "mashup" showing campaign contributions on a map. It provides unprecedented transparency, providing an informative and appealing way to compare candidates and track special-interest giving."
"I-Witness Central City is a storymapping project that aids residents in reclaiming their history and their neighborhood through personal stories accessible online and via a cell-phone walking tour."
"Search across 14 social action platforms for 5 kinds of campaigns: group fundraisers, pledged actions, petitions, micro-credit loans, and affinity groups." Examples of social action platforms include Change.org, Care2 Petitions, DemoracyInAction, GiveMeaning, SixDegrees, etc.
"Imagine how much money & awareness could be raised for our cause (and many other causes) - all by enabling non-profits to share their stories by circulating $1 eCards & eGifts based on videos or images that they've already stored on Flickr, YouTube, Slide and on similar image & video-hosting sites..."
"People can navigate a map of their local area to find support groups, treatment and screening centers and events relating to breast cancer...A directory of people is also mapped out, allowing patients to connect with others in the same situation."
"OpenCongress.org is a free and open-source public resource that combines official government data with news and blog coverage about Congress. Recently, we launched a set of new features for tracking and sharing the best info about bills, issues, and Members."
There really are so many amazing projects, it was extremely difficult to narrow it down to my fav top 10. If I've left out one of your favorite mashups, please share it in the comments!
