Subscribe: Daily Email Newsletter of Rock Star Jobs in the Tech & Social Change Space

Are you looking for awesome jobs in the tech/ social media/ social enterprise/ nonprofit space?

I am, and I've found it frustrating to have to search for jobs everyday on a bunch of different sites and forums. So, as a project for rock stars for hire (in collaboration with Rachel Weidinger and Alex Steed), I mashed together a tool that brings job posts to me by delivering them to my inbox every morning.

And the fun part is - you can use it too! Subscribe to a daily email newsletter of job opportunities here!

The newsletter/mashup works by automatically gathering social change & technology jobs from the following sites:

Job recruiters can also bookmark job postings in Delicious with the tag 'awesomejob' and they will be included in the newsletter.

It would be awesome to add a targeted world-wide Craigslist Jobs search (feeds only available per city), Progressive Exchange Jobs (feeds require log-in), a slice of Philanthropy News Digest Jobs (no feeds available), & a slice from Chronicle of Philanthropy Jobs (also no feeds available).

Ideas are welcome for getting these sites on board as well as suggestions for other sites & forums we should   add to make this resource more useful!

How it Works:

For the technically curious: The tools I used to make this mashup include Yahoo Pipes, Google Reader, and Nouri.sh.

First, I grabbed RSS feeds for each of the job sites mentioned above. I grabbed the full RSS feeds for nonprofit + tech job resources like NOI's Jobs Group & NTEN Jobs. For more broad nonprofit/social change job sites like Idealist.org I did specific queries resembling 'web or online' to get the feeds for social change jobs with a technology slant. And for job sites that don't currently allow RSS feeds for specific queries, like Change.org Jobs, I took their full RSS feeds and piped them into Yahoo Pipes with filters also akin to 'web or online'. You can find a great tutorial on how to filter feeds with Yahoo Pipes by Marshall Kirkpatrick here. All this took (and takes) a bit of experimenting to filter jobs that have that 'awesome' feel.

After compiling a list of feeds, I subscribed to all of them via Google Reader, and added them to the same Folder (in this case, 'Fabulous Jobs'). After that, I went into Google Readers' Settings -> Folder & Tags -> and made that 'Fabulous Jobs' Folder public (by clicking the icon next to 'Private'). Now I was able to click "View Public Page to Your site" to access the public combined feed for all of the job sites I was tracking. Then I grabbed that page's RSS feed.

I could've just shared this comprehensive RSS feed - although took it a step further by heading over to Nouri.sh a tool that lets you easily convert any RSS Feed into an email newsletter. I added the Public Feed from Google Reader and *Walla*, had an email newsletter anyone could subscribe to.   Using Nouri.sh was simple & easy - You pretty much just sign up, add the feed(s) + some information, choose some options and you're done.

You could also use this approach to make an email newsletter for any kind of job search - as well as a way to make email newsletters for other topics you're interested in.

There's a very good chance this process is way more convoluted than it needs to be - I would super appreciative of feedback for making it more streamlined & effective!

Good luck + Feedback Welcome!

Hopefully, this email newsletter will make a good addition to your job search's tool set. Keep in mind that it's just an experiment. Like I've been noticing a bunch of intern positions, which while cool, may not be your cup of tea. And it may (likely) miss things. Although I already discovered & applied for an opportunity that I doubt I would have found otherwise.

Please share feedback via the comments for making this tool better - (suggested feeds, more effective filters & process, etc.) so we can all benefit in our 'rock star' job searches!

you're such a rockstar

Thanks for hacking together this awesome feed and sharing your process with all of us.

Now we can do more saving the world and less looking at several dozen job sites a day.

You really must be rockstars

Great idea. Well done. rg

No suggestions,

No suggestions, unfortunately, but huge thanks from me! Just beginning to find my way around online job listings in the field, so this is very helpful.
