Every Action has an Opposite and Equal Reaction

Today I googled "fear of user generated content" after a conversation with a co-worker about creating an artist registry online with social networking features. This co-worker is funded by the government and therefore has a fear deep in her heart of losing funding because of one person who decides to post something inappropriate. Can anybody suggest some examples of government funded organizations sanctioning user generated content? Can anybody help me sooth her troubled mind?

Heard it many times

Karin,

In co-founded a social networking company (affinitycircles.com) in 2003 that sells social networking products to University Alumni organizations (some are state funded: Berkeley, University of Texas, etc).   Back then, we there was a real fear about UGC.   Today, however, *most* organizations realize that the benefits far outweigh the potential for abuse.

That said, there are many ways to regulate the content created in a social or peer publishing environment:

  1. Clearly state what types of content are allowed on the site in your terms of service
  2. Use standard spam "captcha" technology to stop automated spam-bots from inundating your admins.
  3. Require admin approval before publishing any user content on the live site

or, if you're getting too much UGC to review it all:

  1. Publish all user content immediately
  2. Create simple peer-moderated mechanisms (like craigslist.org) to flag content for review
  3. Remove any inappropriate content

Hope that helps!

Thanks Tyson,

Sorry for the slow response, lol. A few years later...I've moved on to another organization and the organization I talked about above is full force in their use of social media, putting aside their fears and getting on the stick.

It takes a lot to develop a social networking platform of your own, and I wonder if it's worth it for local networks, like, for example, artists in NJ. Well, we'll see if they can do it someday.

Karin
