Churches and the web

Probably one of the last institutions to embrace the web are churches. While the larger congregations aren't jumping on the bandwagon yet, several independent Christian churches are. I spoke to a local pastor who stated that their web presence has brought in several new members to the flock. Could this be the wave of the future?   Time will tell.

There is quite a range ...

There is quite a range - a lot like very small nonprofits. Some plunge in head first, and are doing a lot with the web, and others have lagged behind. I've learned that the same dynamics that are true for small nonprofits, like who is available to help the staff, what tech-savvy volunteers are around, is true for churches. Like small nonprofits, most churches don't have the money to spend on technology, and must depend on volunteers, for the most part.

Friendschurch.ca

The church I attend has invested heavily in its web presence. The design and content is considered very carefully using a communication team and following a strategic communication plan. www.friendschurch.ca has received hits from around the world and the mp3 of the message continues to get downloads and be ITune subscribers. There are a number of blogs associated with the site and written at arms length from leadership. The experiment has born some fruit both in changed hearts and increased attendance but like most nonprofits we have yet to figure out what  next steps to take.
