I'm definitely interested in learning more about the ability of mashups to forward the social change agenda. Our organization provides technical assistance to social change community-based organizations, especially those working in environmental justice. There is a ton of data available, for example through Scorecard.org, the EPA, and the Right-to-know network. It would be interesting to see the different ways to reconfigure this data. Scorecard.org does this already in one way, but mashups, i think, could offer another way to go about doing it.

and we did...
thanks to the collaboration of Chris Messina, a programmer in London named Yoz G, and myself, we were able to create a mashup of toxic release data for the City of Albany, GA. you can check it out at dougherty.ning.com. we also created a group to work on the app collaboratively at doughertygroup.ning.com. i'm real interested in pushing this forward so it's completely useable for our collaborators. if anyone wants to work on it with me, let me know.
Work with Green Media Toolshed?
Funny thing is that Scorecard is a mashup, and does this kind of thing and more see http://scorecard.org/community/index.tcl?zip_code=31704&set_community_zi...
and the scorecard mapper http://map2.scorecard.org/FormPage.jsp?VIEW=data/mainland/community_tri....
Maybe you could see how to combine forces with Green Media Toolshed, who are working on Scorecard? It is always painful to see someone write code to do the same thing again.
Thanks,
Tim
Help The Economist Group create social change
Hi, I saw your post on effecting social change with data, mashups and engaged users. I work at The Economist for an innovation called Project Red Stripe and we've got six months to come up with an innovative web service.
So I put this to you : what could The Economist do on the web to effect social change? Could we do anything that would help "make a difference"? As making a difference is one of the criteria we've set ourselves.
If you've any ideas please go to www.projectredstripe.com. Any questions to tom [at] projectredstripe [dot] com.
Thanks for your time.
