Wossup with conference Podcasts?

Hey Team - I know its been a big hassle to get audio from the conference out but something seems to be broken with the Odeo channel you are using:

In iTunes I can see two episodes about 'Open Source Computing for People' but cannot 'get' the .mp3.

So I went to odeo, found your 'channel', found those episodes and got a wierd error page:

Jose the director of the new National Clandestine Service says you do not have permission to view this page.

Perhaps Odeo and Jose will declassify this page in the future, at our discretion.

But, I'm not happy about it.

Podcasting challenges

Yes, we've had a number of issues with Odeo. Sigh.  That in addition to the fact that iTunes has re-categorized many of its podcasts means issues on both ends.  We need to change our podcast feed to accomodate iTunes' changes, but because we use Odeo, we can't edit our feed, so I'm trying to figure out another solution. Sorry for the mess.  I am not very happy about it either.

Maybe I can help with your podcast feed(s)

Hey Britt,

Since I am an ageing geek with lots of IT experience, maybe I can help you guys out here.  Perhaps we can turn this problem into an opportunity for NetSquared - it really is time that you think about and take control of the names of your RSS feeds.  Sounds trivial but is really important.

Take a look at the 'feeds' page of mikeseyfang.com.

I have been thinking about this a lot lately and fiddling with various ways to implement the stuff you see on my feeds page (take a look at the 'test redirects HERE' link at the bottom).  At the end of the day, you want to make it really easy for people to subscribe to your default feed.  I am getting business cards printed that simply contain 'subscribe to feed.mikeseyfang.com'.

For NetSquared there would be two steps:

1. Use a service like feedburner to create a url for xml feed(s) you want, abstracting the underlying blog/drupal/whatever and taking care of the iTunes/PodCast/Other XML feckery (and giving the bonus of subscription/usage stats)

2. Have your DNS folk point to the feedburner feed(s) with very short, readable names - beginning with the default of feed.netsquared.org .

More than happy to help you guys thru the process - just have to work around the gmt +9.30 timezone.

Fang - Mike Seyfang

p.s. the  'not very happy' line comes from the Odeo error message (not my emotional state!!!))
