Disabilities: There are many many different kinds of disabilities, some are visible, and some unvisible. These people with disablities are humans, individuals, who have more challenges than many of us in walking, moving, speaking learning, simple breathing, hearing, climbing stairs, taking care of oneself in their daily lives. They are PERSONS FIRST, after that they are disabled person, or person with disability These people with disabilities have the same rights as any other, the same rights accomplish whatever they want at their own rate, by using tools and methods suitable to them and in their own way. Suffering impact, or disability impact, only they know and feel, and they find their own selves through the right rehabilitation, products and services. " I laugh, I love, I hope, I try, I hurt, I need, I fear, I cry. And I know you do the same things too. So, we're really not that different, me and you." By Colin Raye.
Physical disabilities can range from, neuromuscular, heart conditions, respiratory, orthopedic, pulmonary disorders. They utilize assistive aids, such as, wheel, chairs, canes, artificial limbs to obtain moility. This type of disability can be genetical, or a result of an injury, trauma, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, or due to a disease or accident - amputation of limb(s). Some of them are "hidden disabilities" not visible, such as epilepsy, or respiratory problems, or depression, etc. Examples:
-Autism - it significantly affects communication and social interactions, usually evident at an early age; Deafness - is a severe hearing impairment which prevents the individual to process; Blindness and deafness combined - it affects hearing and visual; Mental Retardation - this significantly affects the functioning of general intelligence, which transforms in behavioural and other problems; Multiple disabilities - a combination of disabilities, usually two or more; Othopedic disabilities - these are physical, and are usually caused by disease, and/or causes; Serious/Other disabilities - such as chronic Pain, or chronic health problems, has limited strength, energy, and is less alert. It can show as unhappiness, fear, and responses inappropriately; Learning Disability - Usually is a psychological disorder in proccessing the understanding of either written or spoken language, inability to listen and pay attention, or read, write etc.; Speech Disability - such as stuttering, a barrier to communication; Brain Injury - is the result of an injury caused to the brain, and limits the functions of the person, either physically or pschylogically, or both, and is a serious disability.
There are many difficulties that the People with Disabilities have to face daily, such as Access issues, vision, coordination, communication, and stamina. Therefore, it is necessary to become aware of disabilities and its related issues, by acknowledging that the person has a disabilty. Just because a person with Physical disabilities uses a wheel-chair for example, does not mean that the person is "faking" it, or that the person cannot walk with some aid such as walkers, or scooters, or even a cane.
We, at the "New Independence New Abilities" encourage the Technological Companies to develop such products and services that can be used to enhance, and empower the lives of the People with Disabilities. Technology has produced such great products, such as the Scooter, Speech synthiser, or elevated wheel-chairs, specialized golf-carts, beach-wheel chairs, electrical wheel chairs, Tele-communications for the visually impaired, etc. These products provide Freedom, and Accessibility to these people.
Here are some Myths and Facts regarding People with disabilities- Mental:
Myth: Think positively and pull yourself together. Fact is that people who suffer from mental illnesses are suffering from brain disorders, and hardly have any control;
Myth: Schizophrenia means that the person has multiple personalities. Fact: This disease, Schizophrenia changes how the person thinks, and "multiple or split" personality is a totally different disorder.
Myth: How often have we heart that family stress or other life traumas are the cause of Mental Illness? Fact: Stress plays a role, but is not due to "we are bad parents" or such.
Myth: We usually think that people who suffer from mental illness are dangerous and are very violent. Fact: This is a disease that changes or distorts/or exagerates the person's personality, however, if you are a peaceful person by nature, you won't change into a violent one, and really, most often, they are no more violent generally.
Quite often, we assume, (a natural reaction), that People with Disabilities are a seperate, ugly, sick, untouchable Breed. If you look back in the mid '40's to mid '70's, you will be surprised to note that America had a law that stated that for someone who has visible disabilities must not be see in the public.!! Imagine. Although we have come to the realization that these people are also persons, Disabilities Act is formed now, which encourages us to talk and look, and educate, and hire, and accomodate these people. Unfortunately, even today, in our progressive educational cultures in the Western world, People with Disabilities, even today, face many barriers, whether it is at home, public places, or at work. These are due to the learned attitudes, and we need to change these attitudinal behaviours, and to help everyone to become aware of these issues and become sensitize to the needs of these People with Disabilities. We should treat these People with Disabilities that is Equitable in relation to others.
It is imperative that we, as a global community, join together to promote awareness, to provide the right equipment and services that meet the unique needs of the People with Disabilities. In countries like North America, we still lag behind in many areas that can benefit these people, specially when Technology + Education is advanced, how can countries like India, and other such countries provide the People with Disabilities products and services? Therefore, we know there is a real need for a Rehab Facility in India, which will provide rehabilitation to the extent that the person can function at all levels and areas of life, thus living a worthwhile prosperous life with dignity and respect. Let Us Break This Cycle And Uplift These People With Disabilities By Diagnosis, Treatments, Counselling, And Out-Fitting Them With The Right Products, Programs And Services In A Technologically Based Medical Rehabilitation Facility In India, Which Will Enable Them To Acquire Their new found 'New Independence New Abilities.
I look forward to your support. Please Vote For 'New Independence New Abilities' A Technologically based Medical Rehab Facility In India, For The People With Disabilities.
Thank you.

Mental Illness
Dear Susan,
" If you want a message to be heard, it has got to be sent out. To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it." Mother Teresa.
Thank you for taking time to send me your valuable feed-back. I empathize with you, and agree with your thoughts. Let us together promote awareness to the general public, because with that comes acceptance and inclusion, instead of abuse, lonliness, seggragation, and silent sufferings.
At your request, I have tried to write a small piece on Mental Illness with the same title. I hope that this will get the ball rolling for promoting awareness, and getting all of us engaged in talking about its related issues openly, so that the medical community and the governments will be able to provide the necessary resources, and funding for the programs and the development of the right technological tools to enable the mentally challenged to live out their lives in an equitably and dignified manner.
My prayers are with you, your son, and family. Always keep the "Hope" light burning.
In the Spirit of Humanity,
Nina
