What will change in the world because this Project happens?
Imagine getting your news from people from around the world, instead of the mainstream media. Imagine becoming friends with the people who provide that news, and learning directly from them about their lives, their countries, and their cultures. Imagine finding new ways to get involved with the global issues you care about every time you turn on your computer. Imagine taking control of your news cycle, getting inside it, and being empowered by it. Imagine OneWorld Connect, where people are better informed about global issues, can easily share their perspectives on what's happening in the world, and connect with other people and organizations trying to make a difference. OneWorlders will be able to create a customizable "My OneWorld" page to easily and quickly access and share information relevant to the countries and issues they care about the most. Users of OneWorld Connect will have a much better understanding of the world and its people and so they will be more likely to engage positively on issues of global concern.
What information will people interact with to make this change?
Every type of content required to better understand the world and its 6+ billion inhabitants: news, analysis, and feature articles about human rights and development; user-generated articles and comments; profiles of those users; action alerts and events; videos—both professionally produced and user-generated; and NGOs working on the issues around the world. All the info is segmented by region and country as well as 8 major categories and 80 subcategories. People will be able to create a "My OneWorld" page to coordinate all the information produced by OneWorld, its NGO partners, and users around the world in the way they want to receive it. Imagine using this powerful tool to track developments on AIDS in South Asia, water issues in Guatemala, or climate change worldwide. Each user will work with a dynamic world map to select the countries and regions in which they are interested. They will also select issues they want to stay informed of, and the different types of content they want to see related to each issue and country: news articles, action alerts, users with similar interests, NGOs working in the field, etc. Users can return to their "My OneWorld" page regularly to get the latest info or have it sent to them at their own chosen speed (immediately, daily, weekly, etc.) and method of delivery (email, RSS, or SMS). OneWorld currently has more than 400,000 articles published in 12 languages. Users will also be able to share their own stories about global issues and find avenues to get involved with the issues they care about.
What else have you done in this Cause Area?
OneWorld publishes international news, analysis, and feature stories on a daily basis and these stories are tagged by country and topic. We are launching a new Drupal-based Web site that will open the gates to tremendous amounts of user-generated stories, videos, and commentaries from around the globe. And we partner with hundreds of NGOs worldwide that are producing content from the grassroots of every part of the planet. We have the content already; now we need an interface that will allow users to bring that information together in the combinations that best suit their own particular ways of understanding the world. We hope to aggregate both professional and user-generated content to illustrate how different global issues are interconnected and how people can work with others locally and globally to help create a better world.
What kind of help or resources do you need to turn your project idea into a completed mashup?
We need technical development resources to help deliver our content on maps and personalize it for users. This will also require an interface that can pull stories from various OneWorld sites, including OneWorld U.S., OneWorld Africa, OneWorld South Asia, and OneWorld TV, among others. We would like to do mashups around maps, RSS, mobile technologies, and social networking tools. These mashups will enable our users to easily receive the content, find other people interested in these issues, and contribute their own stories.
