Working in Burma/Myanmar - less than 1% cellphone/internet penetration. Neighboring bangladesh has much more cell phone penetration and reception extends into the border of Burma where some of the worst human rights abuses are occurring.
HandHeld Human Rights will take their bangladeshi mobile phone and send a text message and it will be broadcast to a large network of human rights organiziations.
Q. What are the challenges to scaling to other countries
A. Started in burma to because we were already working there. Anywhere we would work in depth with people we would need to have people on the ground. But our software is open source and anyone could use it. The package is replicable but could be localized.
Q. It seems you are creating an environment that will bring commercial pressure on the junta in Burma.
A. By facilitating and empowering the groups on the ground the potential for increasing penetration of cell and internet is greater and greater.
