Phil Klein, web tools, nonprofit communities and networks

I'm enthusiastically looking forward to netsquared to mix it up with you to learn and share and muddle over the gray matter of the evolving web.

I am the dev lead for NPower's TechAtlas for nonprofits, WebJunction's TechAtlas for libraries, TechFinder, and CTCFinder. I'm trying to see how net2 approaches apply to these tools, and what the business & philanthropy cases are for investing in these approaches that can be woven into future strategy.

Over the years, I've also built a number of community information and referral web apps, worked as web apps manager for the City of Seattle, been cohost of the TechSoup Web Building forum, host of the Seattle 501Techclub, and written a guide book to the nonprofit sector in Washington State. Lately I've also worked on a very succesful social support wiki, helping to manage health care support needs.

Goals for Net2, My overall goal is to have good conversations, with an eye towards:

  • How do we connect and integrate our tools better with each other and with the offline world? exploring open community-building practices, standards and open apis etc.
  • What exemplary, successful innovative projects are going on that use net2 approaches? What are the success factors, and why do others fail?
  • What are sensible, practical applications of new tools for nonprofits?
  • What are the problems and limitations of net2 strategies and how can we overcome those?
  • How can we best collaborate on software development? (referring to collaboration between nonprofits, between developers and nonprofit staff, and between developers.)

Hi, Reading this, you seem

Hi,

Reading this, you seem like the person who can give some good feedback on my Helpalot project. As fourth year student Interaction Design I'm working on a site where you can find you charity using social network aspects. Simply said; you can have a personal page that states what charities you support, who your friends are. Also you can write, rate and read evaluations of charities.

Read more about it on www.makingthesite.com (or in the future more on Helpalot.org)

Any feedback is welcome, just leave a comment on the project blog or here.

Julius
