Web 2.0 internship with the Genocide Intervention Network!

Are you interested in changing the world by supporting the first-ever permanent anti-genocide constituency? Do you spend a lot of time online and know what an effective advocacy campaign looks like? Can you build a website from the ground up?

If any of the above appeals to you, we hope you will consider the Genocide Intervention Network's online anti-genocide organizer and web developer unpaid internship this fall at our office in Washington, D.C. GI-Net is committed to building the first permanent constituency dedicated to ending genocide. GI-Net empowers its members with the tools to prevent and stop genocide. Currently we are focused on ensuring protection for civilians in Darfur, Sudan.

GI-Net is seeking a highly motivated and independent student to assist with web development, online advocacy and online organizing initiatives in the fall. The internship may be part-time or full-time, and will take place from Sept. 4 to Dec. 1 on-site. Start and end dates are negotiable.

Application Deadline: August 7, 2006

Job Description

As an intern, you will work side-by-side the leaders of the organization in conceiving, developing and implementing innovative online campaigns to support the work GI-Net is doing. In particular, you will have the opportunity to put your ideas into action — raising money for peacekeeping in Darfur, mobilizing a diverse constituency in supporting anti-genocide legislation and educating the public about the need for a new response to genocide.

This internship allows for a large amount of growth and opportunity — the more responsibility you are willing to take on, the more we will support you with staff time and funding.

Some projects you will be working on include:

  • Developing campaign websites from the ground up, including dynamic coding, site architecture and design.
  • Innovating new methods for member support and engagement, especially involving social networking such as MySpace, Flickr and MeetUp.
  • Reading and staying up-to-date on other Darfur and anti-genocide organizations' projects, including blogs and newsletters, and suggesting methods for collaboration when possible.
  • Writing "action alerts" and member newsletter/blog in collaboration with the public relations and advocacy teams.
  • Reaching out to online opinion-makers such as bloggers and podcasters and staying current with online discussion around anti-genocide and related issues.
  • Integrating online tools and modules for fundraising, advocacy and education, including CMS, CRM, e-mail, congressional contact and donations processing systems.
  • Evaluating the current GI-Net website through metrics, as well as developing methods for making it more effective, accessible and useful.

As with any small nonprofit advocacy organization, interns will be expected to help support day-to-day activities such as responding to member needs, answering donors' questions and maintaining internal documentation. In every case, these activities will involve a direct "line of sight" to our ultimate goal: ending genocide.

Qualifications

Applicants must be independent, responsible and full of ideas. All interns must have strong writing skills.

Some experience in a position of leadership is ideal, whether through campus activism, online or in social groups. Interns must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage a variety of projects and priorities in an effective manner.

Applicants should demonstrate a strong background in the basics of web development, including:

  • Detailed knowledge of standards-compliant, accessible HTML/XHTML and CSS
  • A basic understanding of dynamic web tools such as PHP and mySQL
  • Some experience using a content management system; GI-Net uses Drupal and WordPress extensively, but any CMS experience will be useful
  • Experience using graphics and photo-editing tools such as Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Creativity in design and accessible user interfaces
  • A general comfortableness with online work and online exploration

The ideal applicant will also have some experience in online organizing through social networking and a keen interest in translating online participation into real-world action.

Benefits

All internships are unpaid; however interns do receive $70/month in SmartBenefits to cover local transportation costs.

Ways to Submit Résumé

Please e-mail a résumé, cover letter and two short, non-academic writing samples to Rajaa Shakir at Jobs@GenocideIntervention.net.
