How do you create a cutting edge information service?

Those of you that have seen my first post for the Digital Makeover project will now be familiar with South Yorkshire Funding and Advice Bureau (SYFAB). This latest post and video (at the bottom of the post) take a closer look at how SYFAB provide funding information to the voluntary and community groups that they serve. Information comes from a variety of different sources, and the system has evolved over the last few years as information requirements and the funding landscape have changed. SYFAB are keen to streamline their system and incorporate valuable feedback from their service-users into their service. Is there a web-based solution here?

A more detailed look at some of SYFAB's other priorities is available here, but for those that are time-pressed but interested in getting involved, a selection of these are:

  • Introducing Google Analytics to the website to get a stronger understanding of the volume and demographic of site visitors and the most useful content for service users
  • Adding an RSS feeds to the websites funding news page, so that regular visitors can be informed of updates to the website.
  • Establishing a regular email newsletter, initially with events and training information. In the longer term this could provide an alternative to the funding newsletter or members case studies.
  • Migrating the feedback process on-line to make it more efficient as a whole, and providing an opportunity to provide feedback directly to funders.
  • Offering multimedia content through the website.
  • Re-establish the blog as an informal counterweight to the website that welcomes contributions from SYFAB's service users.
  • Optimise the site for search engines.
  • Development of online training opportunities and provision of interactive online resources to help organisations develop their fundraising skills and knowledge.

If you think that you can assist SYFAB in any of these areas, then please get in touch.

A quick note on the videos that are appearing in these posts. I am uploading them to Blip TV, a video sharing site much like YouTube (but much better in my opinion) before embedding them here. You can view this video in all of its glory (along with of all the other videos produced for the project here.  Oh, and if anyone knows how to stop a Drupal blog squashing my widescreen video - then please help!

Thanks to all of you that have got in contact so far offering your help. It is early days, but very encouraging nonetheless.

Fleshing out the options

Hey Simon-

Wanted to let you know that I just blogged about some thoughts on the initial options you outline above and in the issues and priorities document.  Great start!  I'm excited to see how this develops!
