Following the book, at the Diabetes Hands Foundation we have put out a number of press releases about our work since we started our work last year. To do so, we have spent $80 per press release using PRWeb (a friend of mine who is head of PR at a midsize company and had budget for more than that said she hadn't gotten any more out of PRWeb paying more money).
Still, in a little more than a year of press releases (four in English and three in Spanish), we only got one newspaper article (which we were very thankful for, I must say!) in the US (we got a bit more success abroad, in Latin America, with three articles in Venezuela).
Something else my PR friend told was to make myself available to reporters as a source for a quote, when they needed one on a topic that I could talk about. So I was very happy when I learned about a service called HelpAReporter.com a few weeks ago. Several thousand journalists and writers send queries (not all at the same time, though) and the service sends you two emails per day with a good 20-30 topics that writers need quotes/experts for along with their contact information.
So far, I have contacted three writers as a result of this... and the three writers have gotten back to me, with interest in talking about our story. That is the potential of connecting directly with someone whom you can help, while you are helping get the word out about your work.
Hope this tip helps you guys get more publicity!
