Erica Rios, Internet Project Manager, Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology

You can find me at  xicanista.blogspot.com

I am a Chicana-feminist interested in the development of technology for social change.  I want to better understand the social, economic and political impact of technology has on the world's women, poor and people of color - and do something about it.

I have a B.A. in Political Science from U.C. Davis and transitioned into computing by earning a Masters degree in Interdisciplinary Computer Science from Mills College. My masters thesis is In Sisterhood: A Technology-Enhanced Community Organizing Model.  It is a unique blend of political science, women's studies, computer science and the practice of community organizing. The study reveals how a bottom-up online activist strategy can enhance traditional organizing methods through consciousness raising and motivating political change via grassroots data collection.

In the past, I've used my talents to encourage girls and the visually impaired to pursue careers in technology at Techbridge, protected the rights of working people at Working Partnerships USA, and advanced the rights of women at the Los Angeles Women's Foundation (now part of The California Women's Foundation).

I currently work for the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology.  I oversee our websites (http://www.anitaborg.org and http://www.gracehopper.org) as well as technically support our Systers program (http://www.systers.org).  I believe my work at the Institute allows me to support the recruitment and retention of women in technology fields.  It is my hope that our work will increase women's participation in the production of technology in an effort to create a better future for all women globally.

Bottom-up

Right on, Erica!  It sounds like you are doing some good stuff.

Your statement above that "a bottom-up online activist strategy can enhance traditional organizing methods" sounds a lot like what I was thinking regarding the "activism" panel.  I hope you can come!

All I can say is ... Wow.I

Activism panel

I'll be blogging your activism panel as an "official" N2 blogger.  I'll be sure to introduce myself.

now that's an intro...

Welcome Erica. I'd love to see this quote blown up banner-size and posted over the entrace to the conference: "I want to better understand the social, economic and political impact of technology on the world's women, poor and people of color - and do something about it." Yes! I'm very excited about the work the Anita Borg Institute is doing, and glad to see such a prominent presence of tech-empowered women at NetSquared. Be sure to join in the convo about Gender and the social web at http://www.netsquared.org/conference/conference-sessions/gender

Catherine Guenuracos of momsrising.org (and Net Tuesday LA!), will be speaking at that session and has already started posting her thoughts about MomsRising and Martha Stewart.
