STOP FAMILY VIOLENCE

  • victims of abuse can come together, get support
  • service providers can network as well
  • find out from survivors about what is most needed
  • to support activism

Q: Where are you starting at?

Current online site very different from vision.

She now has wireframes for web 2.0 kinda site.

Q: To what extent do you expect to provide expertise to organizations that have no websites or poor ones?

Likely need to do serious market analysis and proof of concept, see what they need and determine what is realistic to provide those organizations?

Domestic violence centers are often very independent. Don't know how they would fold in at this time.

Q: Who do you want to come to your website? What is the list of your audiences?

The audience will remain the same. 30,000 people around the county.

1/3 are survivors or famiy members of survivors; remaining are service providers and allies.

1 in 4 women will be abused in this country. Intend to keep the same audiences.

Natural progression of experience (three steps):

  1. Get help.
  2. Get informed.
  3. Get involved.

Q: from the audience "Cyber-stalking: how wil you handle it?"

On of the experts says, "You can use technology to help prevent this."
The Executive Director says, She has thought about adding a button that someone can click to let the user name she may have provided too much information. In this way the community can support one another.

Q: from audience - More secure sites have different user experiences. If you keep barriers to use low, less secure and user become more vulnerable.

Suggestion of contacting Benetech to get additional support.

WISEREARTH

Social justice and environmental movement

Q: from expert - Is the elevator pitch "we are the be all site" or is it a b2b or peer to peer site?
A: The site began as an set of organizations. Board began asking for more visibility of people and not just organizations.

Q: What is your site not doing? Seems like the site is great.
A: Want to make site open source so people can re-purpose it.

Q: Re-purpose it in what way?
A: It is a php/mysql site. Don't have expertise to make it open source.

Q: How is your site unique? Differentiate it from idealist.org?
A: This is community based. Idealist is about matching volunteers. It is a different model.

There are 440 priorities established by community. They can re-organize the priorities.

Q/comment from audience: Open source vs. open information? Value is in site's open information, not in the software.

Expert comment: It takes a lot of work to maintain open source code.

Q: from audience - What types of collaborative tools are you offering? What are people actually using? Where are you looking to moving forward?

A: Community is asking for a "hub" to organize more effectively. Want to do doc share for practical purposes like how to write a project proposal.

Q: Have you considered making your site web standards compatible?
A: No, not at this time. Something to learn about.

MYKENYAN SPACE

Started site only 4 months ago. Current site is not consistent with founder's vision. Wants help to move site to what he envisions.

Q: why can't you use ebay?
A: There is a word "ubantu". (Erica says, "I apologize for my phonetic spelling!") - human element of compassion; you put someone above a dollar; we don't have a word like "customer service"; we don't ask price first, you ask someone how they are doing. Ebay does not address this issue. They need a socio-economic solution.

Q: Relate projects to other iniatives like Gremine phones.
A: Many internet cafes scattered across the country. High penetration rate of mobile phones. That is more likely the way someone would access the site.

Q: from expert - cultural differences in social networking on the net, what are they?
A: Social networking - farmers in africa can connect to farmers in canada. This is the kind of social networking he is looking for.

Q: from an expert to help clarify the previous question - At what point does a social networking conversation become an economic transaction? Does the transaction happen online? Or off-line after building repoire.
A: It is time for African's to tell their own story, no longer allowing other to tell the story. Once the story is told the economics will come about.

Q: What is the real problem the farmers encountering?
A: They are only getting 10 cents on the dollar because of the middle man? Kenyan societies can represent 3,000/5,000/10,000 people. Leverage this society to make economy of scale that is culturally appropriate.

MIRO OPENSOURCE VIDEO

Will be coming out of beta period in next few weeks.

Q: from expert - What problem are you trying to solve? I'm still not clear on what it is

A: Open source is important, but open standards is truly more valuable. Example - AOL in early days was great. Took best interest of user to heart. When web opened up to average user, possibilities exploded. This project is being done in the interest of public interest, not for purpose of branding. "Users as point of aggregation, not company as point of aggregation."

Q: Argument seems more philosophical and not so practical. How would the users experience be better?
A: As video grows on web predicts longer format work connected to user overtime, so when new content is published it will be brought to the user over multiple sites.

Q: from expert - I've been a tivo addict for a while. Getting media in the way we want it is highly desirable. Are you the game too early? Is this about people watching television on their computer?
A: Trying to be there very early, because technology likes this get closed very early; they become proprietary.

Q: from audience - Is this about extension standards?
A: We believe users don't need to be part of format wars. Aim to be compatible with all extension types.

Q: from audience - Why would Hilary Clinton want to use over youtube?
A: Would hope Hilary would not choose, but use both. Youtube in short term because of scope of audience, Miro solution in long term in support of democratic values.
