Project Description:
The Catalogue For Philanthropy (CFP), which began as a paper catalogue for philanthropically-minded individuals and families, has in recent years expanded to a web site format that enables donors to search for nonprofit organizations by keyword, location, or programmatic focus.
Points of interest:
The Catalogue For Philanthropy serves as a kind of philanthropic equivalent of the L.L. Bean catalogue, offering a remarkably appealing wishbook on an annual basis for those who seek to support organizations with missions that are congruent with their interests and values. The "webification" of CFP has meant that that many more worthy causes can be included and updated online than would be possible with the paper edition. And although the original focus of the catalogue was Massachusetts, scope of the project has been expanding to include paper and online editions for other regions in the United States and Australia. This online outreach to and cultivation of donors outside the parameters of conventional grantmaking foundations is especially significant because the lion's share of philanthropic funding actually comes from individuals rather than foundations, and online services that are truly responsive to the needs of philanthropic individuals are scarce.
