  • March Net2 Think Tank Round-up: Cloud Computing   2 weeks 5 days ago

I was just reading a study about software as a service, and the fascinating aspect is the amount of cloud-based services that are popping up all over the place. In 1999 there was the company FilesAnywhere that allowed you to remotely host files, and from that a boom in 2005 with Box.net and a few others, then in 2007 Microsoft joined the party, and then last year Apple joined us with iCloud, I haven't found a totally comprehensive online storage list, but it seems like theres a new cloud service every other day.. Innovation is bound to spawn out of the cloud service industry because of the competition for market share. Each player will try to undercut the other and differentiate themselves through better offerings for cheaper - It's only a matter of time because of this movement that cloud technology will be the more affordable route!

  • Promoting Events Via Social Media -- The Way We Do It   2 weeks 5 days ago

Definitely. I think the main thing is to find presences that the audience is using. For example, we found that many people were using and talking about CamTechNet locally, so we knew we wanted to post our events there to increase findability and visibility.

Personally I like the adaptation of Ryan Gosling's meme about SOPA also because it shows the internet approach to remixing the culture and to intelectual property.  And yes, because he's cute too ;)

  • Promoting Events Via Social Media -- The Way We Do It   3 weeks 4 days ago

Thanks for that Claire! It is great to compare the way we did it. So far the main difference is open source platforms vs. Linked in, and the fact that we don't use meetup.

Hi Ruxandra -- this is such great advice for both new and long-running groups! Thanks for taking the time to be transparent about your process.

Other Local organizers -- how do your tactics compare to Ruxandra's?

  • Promoting Events Via Social Media -- The Way We Do It   3 weeks 6 days ago

Hi Alicja -- this is such a great case study! Thank you so much for sharing your tactics!

When I was organizing the Net2 group in Cambridge, UK I used the following channels to promote:
    - meetup.com event
    - twitter @net2camb
    - blog post on net2camb.org
    - Participant google group
    - camtechnet - local techie website of events
    - Linkedin events
    - email pitch to friends or organizations I thought would be interested
    - Asked venue to help publicize via their regular channels

It was a hub-and-spoke model. The hub was meetup.com and all of the other channels pointed to that sign-up page.

I'd love to hear how others are doing it too!

Social Situation and Life Condition in Morne-A-Bruler, Haiti

Morne-A-Bruler is the most abandoned rural area of Haiti because its remote location remains forgotten with regards to basic services since existence does not enjoyed basic transportation, electricity and due to being embraced with poverty there is a high rate of not only health problems but starvation and illiteracy. The prevalence of anemia among children is very high at: Morne-A-Bruler, the rate of maternal mortality is alarming. There is a close relationship between the levels of fertility, mortality and nutritional status of mothers. The evaluation of the nutritional status of women of reproductive age is essential since it allows to identify groups at risk. The absence of a Health Care Center in the diving population is an answer to the death of a sick child, a pregnant woman who has a pain of child birth and accident at night. Generally, people pay a high price to fight infectious diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, aids etc where in Morne-A-Bruler much has to combat such diseases as the situation is aggravated by poverty and due to remote location to the main city is required 9 hours walking on foot to reach to a medical clinic. Let’s take example of someone who is unable to move and require medical assistance. The only means that exists is a stretcher that made by two pieces of wood and not even comfortable to carry sick people. This is particularly why: Morne-A-Bruler Area is a major priority of: Global Vision Over Haiti Today to build a Social Health Center for the people. The hunger, the effect of devastating are very alarming in the country and very difficult to get humanitarian assistances for those abandoned areas because of their remote locations, beyond being emerged before and while and after the Haiti Earthquake January 12, 2010 that worsen the social and economic situation of the country.
Global Vision Over Haiti has mission to provide support to the quake victims, poor abandoned areas pre-Earthquake and that reduce to nothing post by the Earthquake. The organization decide to start developing of: Morne-A-Bruler as this area Have no Health Care center for people visiting and children have no mean to feed and go to school. The objective of the organization is to find out support to build an Health Care Center that would facilitate and reduce the child death rate, of the obsolete practices archaic of childbirth as to cut the navel with razor ‘s blade that developing the illness of tetanus at the child.
The existence of an Hospital or Health center would help also to create employment as well as a School in the community would contribute to promote the emancipation of the education in the country and a source of come back for professors and would help to a better social condition. An exchange of daily habits between professors and pupils. Global Vision Over Haiti Today has been providing Some Humanitarian assistance but, due to lack of means, financial resources, material and supporters, our activities are strongly impossible to achieve. So, the main Goal is to associate our organization to an international company organization as lessor in order to help us accomplishing our vision.

  • Vodafone Americas Foundation's Wireless Innovation Project and mHealth Alliance Award   8 weeks 5 days ago

I agree with warrenbuffet2. This does sound like a great opportunity. I'm excited to see the development that Vodafone can offer in this industry. I think it's great to see how wireless and mobile networks are further reaching people in positive ways, especially in the health industry. This can benefit people in so many ways that may not normally have regular access to medical help and also provide opportunities for patients to reach medical help easier by setting up some sort of medical alert system through mobile technology. I really look forward to seeing how this develops.

It´s very interesting. Specially when one thinks about the evolution of the app use over different economies, which could possibly end up in a new understanding of global/local/micro economies.

  • Interoperability between VOIP systems   9 weeks 4 days ago

VoIp is in fact a powerful and cost effective technology. Integration with services like skype and asterisk is only the realization that it´s probably the logical way that things will evolve.

I have been working as a PBX phone technician for the past 15 years and I have experienced firsthand the growth of VoIP lines both small business and residential.

It clearly has become the technology to go to if you want to stay connected to the world.

  • Shouldn’t the Word Phone be Removed from Mobile? – The Use of the Mobile by Nonprofits for Development   9 weeks 5 days ago

There really is no difference in referring to it as mobile or mobile phone. After all, there are now a lot of new gadgets that have the same features and still are not phones but ARE mobile.

So given enough time, the line between all of these high tech toys will become blurry to the point where even the word moble will not fit properly into the category.
