CommunityWalk

Project Description:

CommunityWalk, developed by Internet entrepreneur Jared Cosulich, is a website based on Google Maps technology. Its primary function is to allow users to to share their communities and their locations -- whether a user's own neighborhood, recent travel destinations, or locations based on specific interests -- with the rest of the online community.

Each community is comprised of different locations that are displayed on a geographic map. Users can add their own photos to these locations and may be allowed to post comments regarding the locations or their respective communities. An upcoming feature will allow users to apply changes to the map, allowing for an even greater sense of community.

When a major earthquake rocked Pakistan on October 8, the nation experienced a devastating national crisis. Tens of thousands perished while millions of others were displaced and needed assistance. Author Kathryn Cramer set up a CommunityWalk page to identify affected earthquake areas and mark relief efforts. Separate CommunityWalk pages have been set up for relief efforts as well, including one that maps helicopter landing zones for relief planes.

Currently, 5% of revenue incurred from the CommunityWalk website go directly toward recovery efforts in Pakistan.

Points of interest:

Due to its mapping-centric mission, CommunityWalk has gained more international users than U.S. users. Maps and communities are defined by individual users, who in turn can connect with each other and form social networks in multiple languages. This is all made possible through the implementation of severeal web languages/technologies, including: Ruby on Rails, Javascript (AJAX), XML, as well as the Google Maps API, which utilizes Google Maps technology.
