Creative Commons is a nonprofit project that offers "an alternative to a full copyright." Creators of original material can choose on a case-by-case basis which rights to they wish to reserve. All that prospective users of the material have to do is respect the clearly stated policy about attribution, commercial use, derivative works, and future licensing. Fortunately, Creative Commons provides explanations of the policies in something close to human (as opposed to legal) language.
Nonprofit organizations that are looking for material to include in their blogs, web sites, slides, or brochures can now have a range of choices that they can draw upon without charge, and also can make their own material in manner that falls somewhere between the extremes of "all rights reserved" and "in the public domain." A Creative Commons license creates options for new collaborations across media formats, organizations, and sectors; this is a legal innovation that is desperately needed in a time when intellectual property is widely circulated online and longstanding rules about fair use seem increasingly irrelevant.
