Project Description:
The Technologies for Conservation and Development (t4cd) project, run by ResourceAfrica and Fauna & Flora International, is finding ways to apply new information and communications technologies (ICTs) to conservation and development.
t4cd interventions are designed to investigate the efficiency of technology deployment in conservation and development – in other words, what size and type of bang will we get for the technological buck that we put in? It aims to bring together various practitioners from the world of ICT, conservation & development to build new partnerships, investigate the appropriate use of existing technologies and generate new innovative tools for practical use in developing countries.

SMS Communities
Communities living around the Kruger National Park have a sometimes-troubled relationship with the park. They often have to deal with ‘problem’ animals, such as elephants that escape from the park, or with park fires that may spread to and threaten their land.
t4cd, working with the Kruger National Park management, the communities and technology companies, is in the process of developing and rolling out an SMS-based solution that offers the stakeholders the ability to communicate mass messages inexpensively using mobile phone messaging.
The messaging solution is also used to send other, more positive messages about, for example, business opportunities.
t4cd is also adapting and deploying SMS messaging for use in Botswana, to communicate community based natural resource management (CBNRM) messages to communities in the country.
