seth horwitz philly net tuesday

Seth Horwitz

At 52, I'm older than most Net Tuesday organizers and enthusiasts, and I've gotten here through a different path… In terms of passion, I was asleep until 1976 when, as a junior at Penn State, I wandered into the "Free University" (which I later directed). The Free U was a student organization through which anybody (town or gown) could offer a course in anything, and we acted as the neutral facilitators to schedule rooms, register people (if desired), publish a catalog, etc. We had 100 courses/quarter, from anthropology to arthropod cuisine (eating bugs). This opened up my eyes to the fact that ANY community has a tremendous wealth of resources, but very limited ways to reveal and share those resources. And, more importantly, that helping people to connect to one another based upon what they find personally meaningful is a radical and profound role that I want to play in my life.

Fast forward. After working and living with Movement for a New Society in the early 80's, I got a Masters in Library and Information Science (Drexel). Then, as a Reference Librarian in a suburban public library (Ridley Twp., PA), I started a "learning network". Patrons could declare a desire to learn, teach or share something (anything). Then I cataloged these interests and interfiled them in the card catalog (remember card catalogs?). Again, the community's hidden resources came to the surface. My favorite: a lonely woman from Quebec invited people to lunch to practice their French.

Fast forward. After 17 years(!) at Telebase (an online information company), I started CommuniShare in 2002, an early social networking experiment, now defunct (http://communishare.org/communishare). Since 2005, I've had a long-term consulting gig with the American Friends Service Committee (http://afsc.org), working on knowledge management and online collaboration for peace and social justice activists around US and the world.

So, I've been passionate about social networking since well before it was popularized by Web 2.0 capabilities. Years ago, I could hardly find anyone who shared my interest; nowadays, I'm trying to keep up with the technical tsunami that has made it ubiquitous.

On the personal side, I'm married to a molecular biologist turned high school science teacher (http://mscearce.edublogs.org). I have a 19 daughter at Hampshire College, who's into making political documentary films (http://hhspeaking.blogspot.com). And I have a 16 year old son with autism and mental retardation. I enjoy hiking, good food, conversation and Tolkien.

I'm a born and raised Michigander. Graduated from University of Michigan in 1973, taught high school science in Australia for 7 years and ran the Astronomy Education Center at the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope for 3 years - watch the movie "The Dish". I've been an owner of 2 ISP businesses in Traverse City, MI. We started the first dialup ISP business here back in 1994. I spent a lot of time teaching people what the Internet was and how to use it. In 2000 we started a microwave MMDS ISP business to reach the outlying areas. After selling the last business in 2006 I did local IT consulting then in 2007 I helped my longtime friend Denis Pierce start his foundation.

I'm married to the lovely and talented Joan D'Argo, am a very proud grandfather of the cutest granddaughter of all time Jade Lynn Krumlauf. My son Zeb and his wife Melinda live nearby which is a real blessing.

Joan and I live in an intentional community just north of Cedar, MI on an 88 acre farm with a 6 acre vineyard. We built our dream home 4 years ago and couldn't be happier. It's a green-built, Energy Star rated home with straw clay walls, solar hot water system and amazingly energy efficient.

I am the Chief Technologist at the Pierce Family Charitable Foundation. I do IT planning and implementation for 7 Chicago-based NPOs focused on homelessness. They are all wonderful, kind, loving people doing amazing work. It is a real pleasure and privilege helping them fulfill their missions.

Traverse City has a lot of small NPOs that are doing great work but could use some help. Being connected to the NPO and technology world made NetSquared a natural fit for me. There is already a talented, diverse membership. There is a very strong sense of community here. A lot of people have been working on local issues together for many, many years. This made my job of pulling people together for the NetSquared group an easy and fun task.

Over 13 years in the industry, he has worked for multiple Fortune 500 companies, including Corning and GE, as well as several small businesses and nonprofits.

Sean believes in one simple equation: Technology + Citizenship = Infinite Possibilities. By empowering organizations and engaged citizens with technology solutions, he achieves all of his goals at once: be a computer nerd, save the environment, promote human rights, create world peace. My vision is a world in which we all work together to meet the challenges facing humanity in a cooperative, solution-focused, possibilities driven, powerful, and awe-inspiring way; a group of world citizens, harnessing the enormity of human potential, to create a continually better world.
