Using the free online social bookmarking tool, Del.icio.us, any user can mark a web page for the attention of the nonprofit technology community by usingthe tag "nptech."
Perhaps the most striking feature of this
initiative is not the "next generation" technology of del.icio.us, but
the fact that nptech tagging project is an all but leaderless
collaboration among individuals who are interested in information
technology for nonprofit organizations. As more participants bookmark
web pages that interest them, a "folksonomy" is emerging - a
non-hierarchical and unpaid effort to sort and share knowledge. The
nptech web pages that are bookmarked range from required reading to
interesting new ideas that merit only passing attention. With no
effort made to screen who can add to the delicious nptech tagging
project or who can view its aggregated knowledge, this initiative has
in turn influenced the creator of del.icio.us, Joshua Schachter; he
characterizes the nptech tagging project as the "poster child" for
adding a group tagging feature to del.icio.us. On the whole, his
development of the del.icio.us web-based social bookmarking tool
continues to be an example of exemplary foresight in design combined
with improvisation in response to unexpected uses of the web site.
