Omidyar Network

Supporting organization:
Omidyar Network
URL:
www.omidyar.net/home
Location:
California
Project Description:

Pierre Omidyar (founder of eBay.com) and Pam Omidyar created a web-based community to support their credo, "We believe every individual has the power to make a difference. We exist for one single purpose: So that more and more people discover their own power to make good things happen.

Points of interest:

In many ways omidyar.net functions as an incubator for social networks and philanthropic projects.  The web site allows individuals and groups to coelesce around shared interests and projects by using tools such as discussion forums, shared worksheets, and blogs. This model combines some of the flexibility of ad hoc initiatives with the continuity of an established community, and emphasizes the role of the Omidyar Network as a connector as well as a funder. A feedback system that is somewhat parallel to eBay's allows Omidyar Network members to earn (and award) reputation points for good ideas and constructive assistance offered to others, thus allowing the strongest contributions the greatest prominence on the web site.
