What people are saying about the 2006 NetSquared Conference:
One of the more influential technology conferences of the year took place two weeks ago in Silicon Valley...what it lacked in glitter it made up for in world-changing potential.... The attendees were an international roster of groups, from established names like Amnesty International, the Kiwanis Club and the American Cancer Society to newer organizations such as Blogher, the Genocide Intervention Network and One Laptop Per Child. ... And thus the two days included dozens of examples of how the Web can organize: from the Katrina PeopleFinder site (created almost overnight by dozens of volunteers around the country) to the MySpace pages that helped mobilize hundreds of thousands of generally apolitical young people for the March immigration protests.
This was a really fabulous conference, bringing together members of the nonprofit community to discuss how internet technologies can drive social change. The speakers were all very knowledgeable and passionate, and the breakout sessions were highly informative.
Discussion leader Michael Rogers of MSNBC was somewhat militant in his opening remarks, which were part of TechSoup’s two-day NetSquared conference in San Jose, California. ‘The mainstream media, they’ve decided not to fight, but to co-opt [blogging technology],’ he said. ‘These powerful tools shouldn’t be ceded to the mass media.’
For those who did not go to the conference, Net Squared is doing great work promoting the use of technology to non-profits as a way for them to do more with less. Much of today's discussion was around the use of social networking tools, tags, blogs, RSS, and the APIs to broaden the reach of non-profit organizations. The Net Squared site is a great source of information and community for folks at NGOs that have some pretty specific needs (opensource fundraising software anyone?).
NetSquared was one of the best conferences I’ve been to in years. I kept having experiences that were so interesting I wanted to blog about them but the coolness didn’t stop and I was torn between doing cool stuff and blogging about it. (Yes I am a geek!) There were just as many cool people as at other conferences, but less chaff.
Video coverage of the conference sessions and speaker interviews was conducted by Link TV in collaboration withNetSquared. The 32 hours of conference footage will be edited over the next weeks, and these segments will be made available through Fora TV and the NetSquared Website. Excerpts will also be used for a Link TV documentary that will air later this year.
