Arrows Interactive Radio for Justice

Using using radio and cell phones to create a dialog on justice
Challenge/s Entered:
Awards:
Summary: Interactive Radio for Justice is designed to encourage dialog between people in regions where the International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, and the national and international authorities responsible for rendering justice to them. Dialog is created through several series of radio programming, each addressing justice in an interactive manner, produced in local languages and aired on community radio stations. In addition, listening groups and public meetings with justice officials are organized so that target communities have the opportunity to discuss justice issues amongst themselves and directly with national and international authorities. IRfJ uses cell phones extensively, since local teams record international authorities based in Europe and US by cell phone, our listening clubs and citizens who listen to our programs contact us by sms (text messages) to inform us when they have questions to record for our programs, and our virtual office, with staff in Paris, London, Boston in addition to Goma, Kasugho and Bunia in the DRC and Bangui, Bereberti and Bambari in CAR, communicate mostly by sms, even more so than by email since networks for internet are so weak in our field bases. For our international target audience we have IRfJ on Facebook as well as a comprehensive website (www.irfj.org) where all audio-files of our programming in French with English transcripts, and all music produced on our Music for Justice CDs, is available for download free of charge.
Increase understanding and appreciation of rule of law, justice and human rights in our target communities - those who have been identified by the international community as having lived through crimes against humanity, war crimes and/or genocide.
Increase appreciation and respect on the part of national and international justice authorities for the concerns and priorities of our target communities.
Provide a positive outlet for expression and learning through our programming and our music projects which people can use to help rebuild their communities after war.
We are always looking for experts to respond to questions on justice and rule of law, including human rights, which are posed by our citizens.
We would be grateful for any advice, ideas and guidance on fund-raising.

I wasn't able to load the video pages onto my page but there are several videos made by the Interactive Radio for Justice that are worth a look! They can be found at:

Arrows Dialed In: A Toolkit to Liberate Your Cell Phone and Reclaim Media Agency

Unleash your Cellphone's Potential
Challenge/s Entered:
Awards:
Summary: Almost everyone these days has a mobile device or cell phone, and for many low-income communities of color across the US, it is our only way of accessing the Internet and communicating with loved ones. And it is these very communities that are most targeted by the Cell Phone giants (think AT&T, Verizon, etc) with exploitative, limited and poor-quality services. But not for long!
1. The Cell Phone Literacy Toolkit aims to give people the confidence and know-how to navigate the interconnected world of mobile operating systems, service contracts, and slick advertisements pushing the latest phones. At the same time, we will give them the knowledge and organizing networks to change that world.
2. We will establish specific policy goals through the course of production of the Toolkit. They will be in line with PPH's broad policy objectives to enable a quality, open Internet experience for mobile phone users and increase the usefulness of mobile phones for digital media production and distribution.
3. We also seek to transform the field of media literacy. As essential as cell phone literacy is today, we fear it will be a long, long time before the traditional media literacy community moves to address this need in anything like the comprehensive fashion we describe. We are just now beginning to see an awareness that media literacy cannot just be about consumption, that in these days of participatory media, literacy also has to include the ability to produce media, to speak as well as to listen. Though we sense excitement for our message that "policy is the new literacy," we know it will take some time before educators understand that policy, too, needs to be incorporated into media literacy education. Having a Cell Phone Literacy Toolkit will allow us to speed up this transformation of the media literacy field.
* Teachers, educators, community and youth workers in low-income, communities of color to take the finished ToolKit and put it into action so that our communities learn how to fight for their communications rights!
* PR & Marketing specialists to help us push out this finished ToolKit far and wide so as many people as possible in the most marginalized communities can access the tools to get educated and get active.

The participants will receive general knowledge and reply to multiple choice questions related to HIV/AIDS subjects. They will send in their answers by SMS, free of charge, while retaining their anonymity. More specific background information leading to the right answers will be found in a special column printed in the local newspapers and posted on the TTC website. If a participant sends in a correct answer, he or she will receive a confirmation SMS with explanation from the TTC server. If someone submits an incorrect answer, a rectifying SMS will automatically follow from the database with the correct answer in combination with an explanation. This will enable TTC to structure the questions and build up a dialogue with the participants. In order to stimulate the participants, the quiz will be linked with a reward system (incentive). Participants who submit correct answers can win attractive prizes. Winners will be contacted by SMS at the end of each week and at the end of the quiz. Arrows TakingITGlobal.org

What if youth everywhere came together to inspire each other, get informed about social issues, and involved in their communities? TakingITGlobal evolved from this idea to a Social Network for Social Good, inspiring youth to create a better world.
Challenge/s Entered:

Summary: In 1999, two young Canadians imagined what would happen if young people around the world could join together online to inspire each other, get informed about social issues, and become involved in their communities. Over seven years, TakingITGlobal.org has evolved from this idea into a powerful platform, a "Social Network for Social Good", with an array of programs, inspiring hundreds of thousands of young people to create a better future. A sophisticated technical platform has supported expansion into eleven languages, and Education programming has been developed to ensure a pipeline of engaged youth into the community.See the case study on us: http://www.netsquared.org/takingitglobal
Future - 30 Days: Consult with experts on developing a scalable plan for our technology systems - 60 Days: Launch a series of improvements to enhance usability and connections between members on the site - 90 Days: Load-balanced servers operational in Asia, Africa, and Europe provide increased capacity and improved access speed to TakingITGlobal members everywhere! Past - November 1, 1999: Idea for TakingITGlobal is developed, Action Plan created- August 2000: First web site launched (profiles, discussion boards, events, organizations), featured in Fast Company - 2001: Spoke at TED, launched tons of new features (featured members, volunteer program, global gallery, updates [blogs], workshops, e-zine), launched sustainability strategy, featured in TIME Magazine - 2002: Executive Director Jennifer Corriero named Global Leader for Tommorow by World Economic Forum, TIG finalist in Stockholm Challenge, launched Country Sites and Project pages- 2003: Received support from Compaq/HP, partnered with UNESCO, finalist in Childnet Awards, launched "Understanding" section to help youth understand global issues, petitions, monthly themes- 2004: Launch of Guide to Action to support youth action project development, received Canadian government support to send youth interns to partner organizations around the world (UNESCO, Youth Employment Summit, Oxfam International Youth Parliament, Education Development Center, Peace Child International), keynoted NECC conference to promote TIG to over 10,000 educators- 2005: HIV/AIDS Program launch, broke 1 million hits/day, sent intern to Sierra Leone to foster West African partnerships, developed partnership with ISTE to bring student voices (photoblogging about the future of education) to world's largest Educator conference, launched site in 5 languages- 2006: Launched site in 6 new languages, launched Education program (TIGed.org) to bring Web 2.0 tools, social networking, and global issues into the classroom. Received grant to expand youth civic engagement in Canada with staff hired in all provinces/territories in Canada.
We need PR/advertising help reaching out to mainstream youth audiences to promote our unique Social Network for Social Good. Globally, our site is in 12 languages - expertise in reaching those language media would be a huge benefit to our growth.
Usability is a huge issue for us - improving the usability of our site is a top priority. Secondly, we need to expand our infrastructure to provide faster response times to users in developing countries. A PHP volunteer would also be of great help!
We would benefit from assistance in developing a fundraising strategy to build an endowment to insulate our core team from funding shifts, and also exploring how we could more effectively monetize our community technology platform.

This is very interesting work, and the organization has been cited by a number of groups for its vision and impact.

I suppose I'll start with a mundane question: what is TakingITGlobal'...

Arrows Freecycle.org

By empowering globally local social networking, we have created a gift economy/community. The magic: it’s easier to give something away than throw it away & keeps it out of landfills; a cyber-curbside; a digital segue from commodity to community.
Challenge/s Entered:
Awards:
Summary: We are creaing a global gift economy in an entirely nonprofit online community at Freecycle.org. Our goal is to make it easier to give something away than to throw it away on a globally local scale with each local community having their own microsite on Freecycle.org which hooks up givers with potential recipients in their local community. Freecycle is a sort of free eBay or cyber curbside.  It represents a global "paying it forward" in which each individual gives away their items which were otherwise destined to fill local landfills. Membership is free and anyone may give or receive in this free cycle of giving. The Freecycle Network was launched with one email about 3 1/2 years ago and is now active in over 75 countries with millions of grassroots members and thousands of volunteers moderating local groups. We are keeping over 300 tons a day out of landfills as a result which amounts to four times the height of Mt. Everest in the past year alone when stacked in garbage trucks. If we are to save our planet, we will need to become inspired reusers. Freecycle.org empowers individuals directly to reuse.

Funding support to complete phase two of our new website. We will be showing off phase one at the conference. We just got our 501c3 in 11/06 so timing is tight for finding the right foundations with the right interests.
Are there existing global nonprofits with such a vast volunteer network in over 75 countries? How to empower the organization to grow with the proper organizational / legal structure in each country so that we don't collapse under our own success?
Are we on the right "social networking" path? We need to hook up our project manager with Silicon Valley folks who speak the same sort of language as him as much as possible during his brief visit here in the US from Birmingham, UK.

Arrows iEARN (International Education and Resource Network)

Challenge/s Entered:
Awards:
Summary: iEARN (International Education and Resource Network) is a non-profit that works to connect schools and youth organizations via email, web and video technologies, in order to empower young people to connect classroom learning with real world issues, and to work collaboratively to find solutions to these issues. Since 1988, iEARN has been at the forefront in providing teachers and students with the knowledge and tools necessary to develop international partnerships and integrate online project-based learning into their existing curricula. Students are empowered by online work that provides opportunities to learn, foster friendships and build cultural understanding. iEARN has over 200 projects initiated and designed by students and teachers to support curriculum objectives. iEARN is a recipient of the 2003 inaugural Goldman Sachs Foundation Award for Excellence in Education, and a 2004 Tech Museum Laureate for technology benefiting humanity. iEARN offers both face-to-face and online professional development.
1988 -- iEARN was launched as a pilot program linking 12 schools in Moscow with 12 schools in New York State in a pioneering demonstration that education could be enhanced and the quality of life on the planet improved if young people were to have the opportunity to use telecommunications technologies to engage in collaborative projects. Working with the New York State Education Department and the Soviet Academy of Sciences, students worked in both English and Russian on curriculum-based projects designed by participating teachers.1990 -- Based on the success of the pilot, iEARN expanded to nine countries in 1990. In each country a "Center" was created to provide training and support. 1994 -- Based on the successful project work completed between 1990 and 1994, iEARN opened its network to schools worldwide. In 1994, the iEARN Constitution was drafted in Puerto Madryn, Argentina. http://www.iearn.org/about/constitution.html. Also in 1994, iEARN teachers came together physically in Argentina to hold the first iEARN International Conference--which has become an annual event (Australia-1995; Hungary-1996; Spain-1997; USA-1998; Puerto Rico-1999; Beijing, China-2000; Cape Town, South Africa-2001; Moscow, Russia -2002; Japan-2003; Slovakia-2004; Dakar, Senegal-2005; Netherlands-2006) to be held in Egypt in July 2007 and Uzbekistan in 2008. 1998 -- iEARN began holding an International Youth Summit in conjunction with the International Conference.2000 -- iEARN-USA asked to author the Teachers' Guide to International Collaboration on the Internet for the US Department of Education (http://www.ed.gov/teachers/how/tech/international/index.html)2003 -- iEARN announced as co-recipient (with Sesame Workshop’s Global Grover) of the inaugural Goldman Sachs Foundation Prize for Excellence in International Education in the field of media and technology, established along with the Asia Society to identify effective and replicable models of international education that address concerns about the economic, social, and diplomatic costs of educational isolationism.2004 -- iEARN-USA announced as a Tech Museum Laureate in the Education category.2007 -- iEARN currently works with schools in over 120 countries. Most of these countries have their own iEARN Coordinator and teacher support structure to help educators integrate this technology into their classroom teaching and learning. Some have also received official recognition from their Ministries of Education as models of education reform. iEARN considers this level of institutionalization to be critical in taking its programs to scale.
