Books for Fiji

(A hero is someone who understands the responsibility that comes with his freedom. )

I have spent my winter school holidays for two years in Fiji volunteering at local school as part of my schools volunteer program . We visited a very remote school that is struggling and has only few books in the whole school, the teachers there can only dream of starting a library.

When I got home I wanted to help and came up with the idea of building the library one book at a time, I started an email chain of friends at first then contact authors to send just one of thier books, then it grew when I started a Facebook group. Its grown incredilblyI have now 1000 plus members of the group and if you visit my page you can see it actually working. And fantastic people are helping spread the word.Part of the page reads.

One person can't build a library but if everyone that gets into this group gets a book from their bookshelf (they don't have to be new) and posts it to Fiji we can do it together.

Project Details
Project Assessment
Financial support:
No
Expertise needed:
Technical Expertise:
I would like to make this project bigger and take on the world one book at a time, this is not about getting books from companies sent, it is about getting ordinary involved and caring for communities, almost everyone wants to help but doesn't know how this project allows people to get involved and personally connect. The kids of the village and adults also see the world is caring about them.

There is some great letters on the Facebook page from people in Fiji sayinghow this project has not just changed a school but is changing Fiji.

I am very proud of the poeple who have joined this project.

Project goals:
MARCH 2009OUR BOOK THAT FACEBOOK AUTHORS CONTRIBUTED TO AND SALLY ODGERS PUBLISHED FOR THE GROUP IS NOW AVAIALABLE TO READ ONLINE. gO HAVE A LOOK IT IS FANTASTIC. THIS BOOK WILL BE PRINTED AND GIVEN TO THE KIDS OF NAMARA http://www.lulu.com/content/64885851st AprilSalanieta Tamanikaiwaimaro Hey Morgan, thank you for sending books to my village - you and hundreds others like you are making a real difference in the lives of young fijians. the books have been able to show them a bit more of the world outside the village - you are AWESOME!I remember Lusi bringing you guys to pick me up from home with your Team and heading off to the village - the best part for me was seeing the smiles on the kids' faces...do you still remember when they did teh dances and crafts and we were taking cloth and putting it around them???
Identified Obstacles:
I have submitted this to the Micrsoft Challenge because I would like to be able to start this project for other schools in other countries. One thing that can be offered to these schools it technology to support the library I would love to be able to develop a internet link with the school directly by placing a computer in the school, this would allow updates of how things are going, and be able to highlight needs quicly, like the need for textbooks for the children to share at the school has just been suggested. I feel the more we connect with people personally the more they will be willing to help.If I was able to get the school connected, and it was possible to start getting books for another school, the two schools could connect, and wouldn't it be great not just helping Namara but Namara helping another school and so on. People don't like just getting help to be able to give is a huge thing, as I have found out.If I win the microsoft challange it would allow for the Namara School to get a computer and internet needed, ( microsoft you can send prize direct to school)and to springboard to show we can do this in other schools.
