Equality in Education for Underserved Youth

Challenges Entered:
Empowering Youth for Higher Education

Future Leaders of America Master Achievers (FLAMA) regional club meetings will take place at the local high schools and one regional student council will meet in order to provide students with trainings focused on developing leadership skills, with a special focus on community organizing and youth's role in improving their community. During these meetings, students will learn about "Campus Activism," "How to mobilize People" and "How to be part of School Government." In May, students will take part of a 2-day conference "Navigating the Educational Roads" in which youth and families will explore the educational inequalities, issues to raise consciousness, and empower parents to become advocates of their child's education. Youth and parents will take educationsl campus tours to various Colleges and Universities within their communities and compare in each campus the various disparities and different resources available to students due to social economic status. During the second day of "Navigating the Educational Roads," School Board members will be invited to talk to students about their role and responsibilities as well as their every day decision making experience when running the school district.

Financial support:
No
Sustainability Model:
Future Leaders of America has support from some private foundations who will provide part of the fundraising goals, but the success of the organization is in great part due to the effectiveness of volunteers, current community relations and collaborations with other non-profit organizations working towards closing the academic achievement gaps in our community. 1. Peer-peer mentorship model. This model is one of the most effective strategies because participants in FLA are inspired by youth just a few years older; high school and university students who have walked in their footsteps years prior to coming back as leaders and mentors. This is a very effective strategy because mentors not only have similar backgrounds, but they have greater influence on youth than any older adults. 2. FLA established relationships with School Principals, Counselors and teachers of the Oxnard, Pacifica, and Moorpark High Schools. Collaboration from these schools will help to accomplish the goals and objectives of the project. 3. Active participation and collaboration from FLA alumni, staff volunteers, as well as other community organizations such as the Oxnard Police Department, Just Communities, CAUSE, PUEBLO, and Ventura County Public Health will also serve as a strategy to organize communities. By collaborating with others FLA will automatically be instilling in youth and community the practice of working collectively to solve social issues.
Expertise needed:
Future Leaders of America is constantly looking for inspirational speakers who can relate to the population we serve and serve as mentors, role-models and presenters during the University seminars and conferences.
Project goals:
Increase the amount of students participating in Associated Student Body (ASB) and their school Clubs.
Increase ability to organize communities and build collective wisdom to address issues related to, socio-economic inequity, discrimination and lack of inclusiveness at their participating schools. The objective of this goal is to supply youth and their families to participate in a series of leadership trainings for youth that will tackle the inequity in education issues including socio-economic inequity, discrimination, and lack of inclusiveness at their participating schools.
The long-term goal is to instill leadership skills in youth, parents and community members that will empower them to mobilize others to raise consciousness, develop the necessary skills to become activists and resolve issues related to socio-economic inequity, discrimination and lack of inclusiveness in the educational system.
Identified Obstacles:
Limited Funding for Transportation (when driving students/parents to various campuses)
