Help From Home - Microvolunteering for the Masses

Challenges Entered:
Change the world in just your pyjamas!

Help From Home http://helpfromhome.org/ is a volunteer driven, grassroots initiative that runs a free community service to promote and encourage participation in easy, no commitment, home based, microvolunteering opportunities where a spare 10 seconds to 30 minutes is all that is needed to help out worthy causes - from anywhere in the world, even in your own pyjamas!

As our name suggests, we primarily promote microvolunteering as home based, but over time have developed various other ongoing microvolunteering projects, including:

Help From School - encouraging people to change the world within their classroom as part of a citizenship course
Help From Work - encouraging people to volunteer during their lunchbreak, without leaving their office environment
Help From Seniors - encouraging senior citizens to volunteer without getting out of their armchair
Help From Holiday - encouraging people to think about responsible tourism by volunteering before, during or after their holiday
Volunteer Anywhere - concept project combining interactive social media format with impact reporting tools within a microvolunteering environment

Help From Home was set up in December, 2008 to address the problem that the UK voluntary sector was not promoting such microvolunteering actions at the time. It was also set up to convey the notion that people could volunteer on the go, on demand and on their own terms - even in their pyjamas if they wanted to! It is now being promoted by the UK government, the main volunteering bodies in England and Wales, as well as over 50 UK high street volunteer centres, amongst many other prominent organisations.

Help From Home is considered to have the largest known directory of current active microvolunteering opportunities, with over 800 as of November, 2011. Help From Home is attempting to bring this form of volunteering to many, many different sectors of society to not only increase the potential benefit to worthy causes, but to educate people on the extremely simple behavioural changes they can make in their life, to 'do good'.

Sustainability Model:
We had been in existence for 2 years before we finally got some funding. This enabled us to create a new website with additional functionality. Some of the most prominent orgs in the UK voluntary sector have started to promote Help From Home and even created new volunteering categories (called surprisingly, microvolunteering) due to our promotional efforts of this concept. Although we don't have the infrastructure to take microvolunteering to the next level, this degree of interest from prominent volunteering orgs does however give us a great springboard to approach social enterprises to embrace our vision and create a sustainable model around what we have created. Our new microvolunteering project called 'Volunteer Anywhere' focusses on a combination of an interactive social media format with impact reporting tools. It is designed to reach further into society whilst providing users with feedback on the impact of their participation. Although there are a few other microvolunteering networks in existence, our model revolves around an implementation of microvolunteering that no other network is promoting. We feel this makes us somewhat unique.
Expertise needed:
- Wordpress/PHP website designer to add additional social impact reporting features to our current website or to develop / guide us for our 'Volunteer Anywhere' project
- More volunteers needed with commitment and passion to extend Help From Home's reach
- Development expertise to promote our growth
Project goals:
- Change people's mindsets that they can volunteer within their own home and with little impact into their daily lives
- To find an organisation that has the depth of expertise and infrastructure to integrate our 'Volunteer Anywhere' project within it's portfolio of services
Identified Obstacles:
- Not enough knowledge, experience and expertise to elevate it from a grassroots level to a social enterprise
- Resources to propel our vision forward
