milk path towards prosperity at their door steps through mobile enable Small Messege System and the Touch Screen Technology

Challenges Entered:

In developing sustainable Livestock, Agriculture and ICT development activities at rural level is a vital factor for economic development of our country. Although the usage of ICT related activities are known technologies and methodologies in the urban and suburban areas in Srilanka, the application of ICT for the day to day life in the rural areas are still far away when compare to the other countries in the region. At the same time women and youth play a significant role in house hold economy that makes us to recognize them as our main focus group.  Hence empowerment of them, respectively women in the house holds in appropriate technology application and usage while the youth are being trained to dissemination of ICT services at the door step of house holds, development leadership with inside and outbound training and development activities to guide the participants of relevant activities acceptable to them as well as due recognition given for these operators are the most significant factors in our practicing theories.  Target group;    Small dairy Farmers/Private/Public sector service Providers

Issues to be addressed;

  • Lack of just in time services at field level to achieve required productivity level to make the industry sustainable.
  • Mistrust between end users and service providers
  • Lack of private sector base extension activities
  • Lack of organizational capacity for farmers to lobby for an improvement of the services and it's delivery.

Content of the Extension services would be provided through e dairy project;

Artificail insemination

Pasture Development

Animal Health

Breeding services

Clean milk production

Good Feeding Practices

Good management practices

Good milking practices

Calf rearing

Impact;

We expect to get involve 400 small milk producers in this pilot project and achieve 30% growth in prifitability of the farmers at house hold level.

With the succesfull outcome we expect to eeplicate this project in other areas as well.

Project Details
Project video:
Project Assessment
Financial support:
Project has financial support
Sustainability Model:
We expsect to raise the recurrent expenditue through the private sector service providers in this project as stake holders to market their service and products through the shopping cart we intend to create for the project.
Expertise needed:
Technical Expertise:  In expanding this pilot project and to expand the digital contents of the   e learning   we would like to create a soft ware eanbling   voice that would help in great way as community prefer voice than digital screens.
Technical Expertise: A pathway for way for rural people living where they do not get access to any mobile network aviliable in the country.Probably a institution that could provide us a gateway through satalite sevices or any other option we could make use.
Project goals:
1. January 2009-reparing digital content.e learning contents2.January 2009 -Achieving 505 of the 1st milestone3.Feruary 2009-E learning process   for stake holders such as farmers and service providers4.March 2009-Achieving 50% of the milestone 35.March 2009-Presenting the prototype for stake holders for gap filling6 May 2009-Achieiving 100% of the milestone 17.June 2009-Acheiving 100% of the milestone 38.July 2009-Launching the operation9. July 2009-Publicity & Promotion10. September 2009-Gap filling  & restrcturing the activities along wioth the changing needs.
Identified Obstacles:
The buracracy attitude of public sector service providers as they are not satisfied with the exposure of the ability to evaluate the  quality of their services to the grass root level through this project as it provide access to each individual and institution through the web to monitor the day to day activity and rating of performence of each person involved inthe project.As it applies at grass root level ,the e learning proces and capacity building of the farmers aloocated in the pilot project may not adaquate enough and further fund need to be continue this activities atleast for another 6 manths period from July 2009.Once the piot project over the sustainability should be depend on the private sector service providers and a capable marketing hand need to be look after and assured the admininstrator expenses and maintenence of the project with remadial actions.

Artificial insemination

Once the cow gets to heat in 45 days intervals it is a nessacity to etiher artifical insemination or using a stud bull to be used within 12 hours period,if not he misses 45-60 days milk yeild that cause a significant loss for him.In rural areas at the moment the only access is to telephone him or see him personlay to pass the messege to the technician to carry out the AI.Hence by creating this linkage within the time limit improve the productivity of the farmer and ourintentionis using SMS to create this link controll and mange by the soft ware pasiing the mesege not only to oone technician but to all the technician and selecting the nearest person and link him with the farmer with an assured folow up and data recording by the software which could be evaluate at any stage of the process through the web installed. Furtheer a touch button screen place at the milk collection points would help the farmers who does not have mobile or CDMAs to get access to the service providers.

Great effort

it is a fact that the whole Srilankan Dairy industry depend on small milk producers having 2-10 animals as an additional income generation activity at house hold level.the great difficulty face them today is lack of just in time animal health care services ,especially serve their cows when they come to heat for breeding.this gap make farmer loss of 2-3 breding cycles causing a loss of 60 days milk yeildswoth around LKR 30,000 and if we consider the whole farmers count around 600000 affected in this way, it means a loss of huge milk yeild for the country.

Hence if this effort provide results atleast for 100000 farmers once it implement through out the country ,it will produce a growth of 20-30-% of milk yeild only as a result of this edairylanka project that provide   just in time services through SMS
