Mobile Phone Adopting Schools

Challenges Entered:

This project is currently at the conceptual stage and based on the fact:

i) There is currently 90 million mobile users in Pakistan,

ii) Education is one of the pre-requisite for development and currently schools are in very poor shape with students droping out either there are no education facilities or they can not afford it.

iii) People and communities are willing to help as long as they know where their support is going.

With these factors in mind, each mobile user will have the opportunity to adopt a school and will have the choice how much he wants to donate (e.g PKR 1 per PKR 100 usage). The mobile company will provide this money to the school management committee every quarter which will be used towards school running, renovation, expansion and students' support. All those contributing to a particular school will be informed via a text message how much money has been collected and how it has been used.

Project Assessment
Financial support:
No
Sustainability Model:
The strongest component of the program is its sustainability. When ever people will be using mobile phones, they will be contributing a small amount. This amount will be small enough not deterring them to stop contributing. As long as they will be using mobile phone, and they will see a themselves making a difference, the project will be sustainable.
Expertise needed:
Technical Expertise:
There is a great potential to take this idea further and expand it to other areas (e.g. health). It is important to discuss this idea with the mobile service provider at a higher level. We will need technical expertise and support from these companies.

Marketing/Media Expertise: My colleagues and I, working on volunteer basis, have the capacity to provide the management support and policy frameworks. The project will also involve marketing, financial management and community mobilization. Even though for the time being we are focusing on Pakistan, this idea has the potential to be expanded to other countries and other fields.
Project goals:
The funding, which we will take as SEED funding, will be used to kick start the project and make it a reality. Once started, given the inbuilt sustainability features in the project, we will not need any future support.
Identified Obstacles:
Bringing the mobile companies on board will be the biggest challenge. However given the intense market competition together with the desire to be better than their competitor and appealing to their cooperate responsibility cultural, it is possible to achieve this goal.
