VISION AND SOCIAL IMPACT

"Concern for man and his fate must always form the chief interest of all technical endeavors. Never forget this in the midst of your diagrams and equations." By Albert Einstein.

TO PROVIDE REHABILITATION TO THE PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES SO THAT THEY CAN LIVE OUT THEIR LIVES AS SELF DEPENDANT INDIVIDUALS WITH DIGNITY. REHABILITATION IS LIKE INSURANCE ASSURING THE PERSON WITH DISABILITY WITH RECOVERY.

We are all God’s greatest Creations, His Master Pieces. If God made us, then where is His Perfection? I will tell you: His Perfection is in People who care to include people with disabilities in their lives and provide them with equitable rights. His perfection is in you, who are capable of uplifting them, and providing them with all and any assistance that you can provide for them. In you lies God’s Perfection, You are His Miracle Worker.

I, Nina Nath have a dream, a VISION

A VISION to see that these people with disabilities are loved;

A VISION to see that these people with disabilities are treated as people with different abilities;

A VISION to see that these people with disabilities are provided all of God's riches;

A VISION to see that these people with disabilities are REHABILITATED in a fantastic, state of the art facility, with the best of the best care givers;

A VISION to see that these people with disabilities are provided with the latest technological assisting aids;

A VISION to see that these people with disabilities are provided with the training that is suitable to their unique God given talents;

A VISION to see that these people with disabilities are provided jobs suitable to their knowledge, and skills, rather than their disability;

A VISION to see that these people with disabilities are prosperous participants in the fabric of our society and life;

A VISION to see that they are treated as equitably, because in the eyes of the Creator, they are just as Equitable as you and me.

I have a VISION to make this VISION a REALITY.

I have a VISION to have all of YOU as Participants in manifesting this VISION into a REALITY.

I HAVE A VISION to see this VISION become a REALITY in my life time, RIGHT NOW.

I invite you all, here and now, to become their

ANGELS AND THEIR MIRACLES.

Our goal is to be instrumental in providing by humanitarian and local entrepreneurial means, for the people with physical disabilities, medical rehab, education, transportation, freedom, special equipment and services, skill training, transitioning support into the work force, recreation, a one stop center for mind body and spirit well being, thus enabling the person to be a participant in life with better attitude, become more productive, and be a happy whole person. This in turn will enable faster economic growth, promote the exchange of ideas, thus fostering understanding of different cultures and recognize the global nature of co-existence in any industry or environment.

Our mission is to change facts such as these:

v Stipend to students who are disabled in India receive max. Rs.110/mo.for std.X11

v Old age pension per beneficiary till death for disabled – Rs.100.00 a mo.

v Assistance to the disabled for purchase of aids varies according to family income, if total family income is Rs.1200.00 a mo., the cost is free; but if the total family income ranges from Rs.1201.00 to Rs. 2500.00 a mo. They can receive concession at 50%.

We believe that:

· Encouraging participation of people with disabilities as well as able people to avail of the products and services at this one stop center

· The success of people with physical disabilities and able people is awareness and solutions, which are specialized equipment, medical rehab, recreation and understanding

· Freedom is priceless and valuable, to provide a chaueffer driven Bus equipped with a automated ramp so as to lift the wheel-chair with the disabled in it.

· Removing barriers to participation for the people with disabilities by emphasizing on access not outcome, so that persons with disabilities can function at their optimum levels, by providing them with disabled friendly bathrooms at all public and employment places, and by renovating their homes to suit their disability, educating everyone, promoting awareness and products that can be used by the disabled to become independent and free.

· Each one of us has limitations, and each one us can gain from assistance-related technology

Due to the disabilities, a large number of people with disabilities are more than often denied education or jobs, which has a rippling effect on the family, and thus they become a drain and an added cost to the household finances. This in turn, affects the person with disabilities, emotionally, mentally, physically, by manifesting in decreased function, and increased poverty. Unless REHABILITATION takes place, this cycle will continue.

Project Summary:

"We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty." Mother Teresa. This aptly descripes the People of Disabilities, who are unwanted and are the Forgotten ones.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce this project, "New Independence New Abilities" for the People with Disabilities. Our aim is to provide by humanitarian and local entrepreneurial means for the People with Disabilities, a Medical Rehab Facility, a One Stop Center, for the WHOLE PERSON, MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT WELL BEING, IN INDIA, which will provide products and services which will serve the unique needs of each individual. As you maybe aware of, there are over 750,000 remote villages in India which have absolutely no medical assistance available to them, and many die an unnecessary painful death. These remote villages are untouched by India's prosperity and progress, it is here where over two-thirds of the population live, and endure back breaking, empty-stomach poverty. In order to accomplish all this, first and foremost, we require substantial amount of funding, which will assist us in implementing this Rehab Facility for the People with Disabilities, thus enabling us to address their issues:

"Concern for man and his fate must always form the chief interest of all technical endeavors. Never forget this in the midst of your diagrams and equations." By Albert Einstein.

  • Mobile Tele Health Ambulances and Fire Trucks, so that lives can be saved and rehabilitated. Telemedicine is the newest technology that transfers information instead of patients, it uses virtual communication and real-time audiovisual information to treat the patient in remote areas as well treat the chronically ill and/or elderly patient who lives at home, but requires regular care of medications;
  • In this Facility, the process of rehabilitation includes various assistive related technolies and aids, accessibility products, acquatic therapy, audiology services, Braille, Computer magnification systems, voice recognition software for the visually and hearing impaired, physical therapy, adaptive aids technologies, such as lift chairs, mobility products, such as self propelled wheel chairs, height adjustment wheel chairs, for recreation there are special golf carts which can be driven on the grass and do not wreck the grass and the individual can golf while sitting in the specialized golf cart, as well there are self propelled beach wheel-chairs that an individual while sitting in this, can enjoy the swimming pool, or the ocean, specialized transportation, equipped with a technological ramp lift to lift the individual sitting in the wheel chair, or scooter which has brakes on the handle (hand brakes), education for the disabled, their families, as well as the Government, the Corporate world, skill training, and mainstreaming support in the work force, by utilizing remote employment technology, as well as specialized furniture to meet their unique disability needs;
  • Removing barriers to the participation for the People with Disabilities is another basic step, so that these Special People can once again savor Freedom and Life. Accessibility is a celebration of diversity and every human being has the right to it even the People with Disabilities, portable ramps, bathrooms, offices and homes should be renovated to accomodate these Special Needs People;
  • All of these components will empower and enable these People to become Participants in Life with Better Attitudes, enable them to become More Productive, and as a result these Special People will become Happy, Productive and Wholesome Individuals;
  • Due to the disabilities, a large number of people will disabilities are more than often denied education or jobs, which has a rippling effect on the family, and thus they become a drain and an added cost to the household finances, and the Society at large, which in turn manifest POVERTY;
  • Unless Rehabilitation and Education takes place, this cycle will continue. The process of rehabilitation is extremely essential, since this will assist an individual to achieve the highest level of their independence and regain the quality of life - physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. Although it does not reverse the damage caused, it does in fact assist the individual to restore to optimal health;
  • Education for women is lagging behind in these progressive times;
  • Old Age also produces disabilities. Senior population is also growing, producing various disabilities, along with the related issues and problems;
  • India is the world's second most populous country in the world. In any given large city, the population is over one billion, and along with this population growth, there is the growth also of the People with Disabilities of every age, race and class. It is estimated that in any given city, 90 million people are suffering from one or other type of disability to various degrees;
  • 91% of its population lives on $1.00 - $2.00 a day according to the U.N. Population reference bureau report.
  • According to a survey done by McKinsey & Co. in 2003, one bus served 1300 people, two public parking spots were provided for every 1000 cars, 17 public toilets for every million people, and one civic hospital for every 7.2 million people, over two-thirds of the people lack clean drinking water, and over 2 million have no access to a toilet, IN ANY GIVEN CITY. Every day, over 150 people are either injured, or die simply by falling off the trains, buses and buildings.
  • The percentage of disabled people that are employed in India is only 1%, as compared to other countries, which range from 40% or higher;
  • The women and children that are disabled - 40% had been raped, abused or assaulted, 64% had been verbally abused, girls and women and children have little to zero access or escape route to services for the victims of violence. (sobsey 1988 The epidemic of HIV/AIDS is very high and the the raped People with Disabilities are at a very high risk;
  • 80% of all of the expenditures related to healthcare are borne by the patients, while only 12% is borne by the State, and the 3% expenditure is covered by insurance claims. Therefore, it is out of reach of the majority of the public to have access to the high level healthcare facilities, making the pricing a sensitive issue.

Our Primary Focus is State of Art Technologically based One-Stop-Rehab-Facility-offering a variety of products and services customized for The People with Disabilities regardless of Age-Color-Caste-Class. DISABILITY COMES UNANNOUNCED, MAKES NO APPOINTMENTS, DOES NOT CARE WHETHER YOU ARE RICH OR POOR, OR WHAT YOUR AGE OR COLOR IS NOR DOES IT WAIT FOR THE RIGHT TIME. To combat Disabilities, a Medical Rehab Facility equipped with the latest technological products, programs, and services has become the most basic need for People with Disabilities. The burst of insight comes when one's own loved one is hospitalized with broken neck (for example), and then we are reminded of how tormenting the physical suffering can be, and we silently wait and pray. We hear whispers of words from the medical team, words, such as "spinal cord damage", or "delicate surgery" or "paralysis" and waves of anxiety, and crippling fear, overpower us. Therefore, I cannot stress enough the Power of Rehabilitation, which is life line, a second chance to gain New Independence New Abilities. Rehabilitation empowers the Person with Disabilities to plan and develop ways that they can participate as full citizens.

By providing the right tools, products, programs, barrier free environment and Access to Rehab-Facility, we can raise Awareness and Change the Public-perception by utilizing a variety of Mass-Media tools, websites,-TV, Radio, newspapers spots, and educational brochures. Let us together join hands to Change the course of HUMANITY enable the Disabled to become more confident with-IT technologies, because the IT jobs demand less physically, the People with Disabilities and the Seniors can work from home by utilizing the various types of adaptive technolgies that can assist people with disabilities to overcome certain barriers by specific disabilities; the remote employment technology can be used to perform duties at any location other than the office, either on a contract or an employee basis. This provides flexibility for employees and tailors the individual's job.

We can direct our entrepreneurial energy toward lifting these people in despair, whether they are living in poverty, or are disabled without any resouces, or are uneducated, or unhealthy. Instead of year round fund-raising to meet operating costs and other associated expenses, it can be achieved in one swoop by collaborating with several key funding partners, thus producing a collaborative approach to funding, allowing no one to carry the entire burden or risk, since they become like a donors circle tied to each other, allowing each side to work towards each other thus allowing them to emerge with meaningful relationships. The people who are wealthy, will be invoiced the appropriate amounts for the purchase of their products and services. These funds will also enable us to provide FREE products and services to the disabled poor.

We, at the "New Independence New Abilities" urge you to please extend your hand, as a colleague, as a peer, as a leader, instead of extending a handout of Pity. This attitude will ultimately accomplish more for the growth, eliminate abject poverty, and provide awareness for the People with Disabilities, thus producing solutions for the ultimate sustainability of every human being. We strongly believe that the People with Disabilities are People with Different Abilities, when equipped and empowered by the right resouces. As Mahatama Gandhiji said "A Small Body of Determined Spirits Fired by an Unquenchable Faith in Their Mission Can Alter the Course of History." We are forward looking, thus we are able to concentrate on creating opportunities and ideas so as to enable business growth, and health improvement. Take a moment and put yourself in their shoes, take a moment and think, what if it was you or your loved one, what then, what would you do? How will you cope? These are harsh realities, and the time has come to face, to deal with them and take ACTION. We now require the bloodstream (Funding) to give this unique Rehabilitation Facility a LIFE.

"We know that, when it comes to technology and the economy, if you're not constantly moving forward, then - without a doubt - you're moving backwards." By Bill Owens.

Whle nationally India is now becoming health conscious, those out in the "trenches" of human need and spiritual despair, witness the deterioration of family life and its most precious part - children -who work and suffer silently. I VISION, PLAN, COLLABORATE and CREATE MODELS to harness the resources and unique strengths of both the Global and National people to work synergistically toward the reunification of the family with their Disabled family member which will break down the barriers and stigma associated with the Disabled.

I invite Celebrities and Leaders around the World to become Ambassadors for "New Independence New Abilities" which is dedicated to the People with Disabilities. It is very very rare that any Celebrity will fight for People with Disabilities. Can you?

I look forward to your kind and generous support in helping me to implement and operate this Medical Rehabilitation Facility including the Remote Technology based Services, such as an Ambulance and Fire Trucks equipped with Remote Tele-Medicine technologies and the Freedom Bus-Specialized Transportation for the People with Disabilities.

We need you, the People with Disabilities need you right now. LET US JOIN HANDS AND CHANGE THE COURSE OF HUMANITY FROM THIS MOMENT FORWARD. LET US GIVE THEM THEIR 'NEW INDEPENDENCE NEW ABILITIES'. .

In today’s prosperous and progressive age, why, why, is it that People with Disabilities are totally unacknowledged as part of the human race? Why?

Will you become the Remedy for the Apathy of all Human Beings? Will You? IF SO, THEN PLEASE DONATE GENEROUSLY. GOD BLESS.
"Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat."By Mother Teresa, who so very aptly describes the "People with Disabilities, who are The Forgotten Ones"

Thank you.

Voter Chaos??!!!

Voter Circus: Thanks 2 Family, Friends & Folks We Drink With

Welly, well, well. I've just been "kindly taunted" by yet ANOTHER neighbor about this painful voting process. After fielding a plethora of voting complaints all week, most of my voters said they chose my proposal, and then quickly chose 4 random organizations "just to be done with it". I'm curious if the majority of the winners will be in the top most accessible part of the drop down lists. Hmmm....Well, at least they're ALL good causes.

I'd be more confident about the status of my proposal if a panel of judges involved with non-profits were selecting the winners, not our family, co-workers, and people we get drunk with. Why not call this competition "Hurrah for Everyone"? Relying on the votes of people who want to see us happy (or those who owe us favors) voids the point of why we're all here, turning this into a very painful popularity contest.

"Newbies" to the non-profit world are especially at a huge disadvantage in this competition. Those who have established groups of peers in other non-profits are going to do far better with voter turnout. As an annoyed voter friend of mine said this week "...who the hell has time for this? - Other people who work in non-profits!! THAT'S WHO!!!".

If you must let friends and family choose winners rather than a panel of informed, experienced judges who live, eat, and drink "non-profit" on a daily basis:
1. Have voters submit an email address and not require a log in process.
2. Make the ballot link easily to find.
3. Let voters choose "up to" 5 or so organizations, and not a mandatory minimum of 5.
4. Cap the limit of entries. 150 is too many. It would've been hard enough to choose 5 out of 20.

The winner turnout will be interesting, that's for sure. In the meantime, it's friday and I owe a lot of people a lot of drinks.

My Response

I am in total agreement to your comments and views.  I also had sent a similar blog, since I also received very similar comments, specially:

I do want to add though that on the positive side, this has given us a platform to promote awareness of the causes/subjects that we are involved in.  As well, hopefully, the exposure will produce positive results, such as sponsorships, generous donors, funders, new ideas, and of course, hopefully, the governments will catch up, and try and implement changes in the laws so that these people are recognized, and the organizations that are trying to assist these unfortunate people, will be provided with the appropriate funding and resources.  I am hopeful that the outcome will be good for all of us participants, and a learning lesson for all of us that are involved. Solutions arise from problems which equates to progress.

What a learning journey and experience for all of us!!!  Thank You.

PeoplewithDisabilities/Technology/Rehab/New IndependenceNewAbili

Hello Everyone,  http://www.netsquared.org/projects/vote

Technology today plays an important role in every area of our lives.  So, it is not surprising that today there are products and services in the health industry that are very technologically based, such as, TeleMedicine, which is the newest technology that transfers information instead of patients.  This system uses virtual communication and real time audiovisual information to treat patients in remote areas, as well as treat the chronically ill and/or elderly patients who live at home, but require care and medications.

Introduction

People With Disabilities Are People With Different Abilities. As our Mahatama Gandhi said: A Small Body of Determined Spirits Fired by an Unquenchable Faith In Their Mission Can Alter the Course of History.

Defining People with Disabilities

People with disabilities are not conditions or diseases they are individual human beings. The Definition of Disability Is If a Person Has Physical or Mental Impairment That Substantially Limits the Person to Perform One or More Major Life Activities Such As:

  • Caring for Oneself

  • Performing Manual Tasks

  •  Walking, Seeing; Hearing

  •  Speaking; Breathing; Learning, Working

  •  Physical, Sight, Speech or Hearing Impairments.

Some of the most common disabilities include the following:

    Down Syndrome, Epilepsy

     Speech and language impairments

      Muscular Dystrophy, Paralysis

      Mobility impairments

       Multiple Sclerosis

       Deafness and hearing impairments

       Cancer

       Heart Disease

       Diabetes

       Chronic Illness

        Blindness and vision impairments

        HIV and AIDS

      Cognitive and psychiatric impairments

      Learning and developmental impairments

"The creation of a thousand forests is in ONE ACORN." By Ralph Waldo Emerson.

As you maybe aware, the People with Disabilities are the "Forgotten Ones".  There is really no "Big Voice" for them, and are extremely neglected and abused.  I would also like to invite Celebrities and Leaders to become voluntary Ambassadors of "New Independence New Abilities" dedicated to the People with Disabilities.  Let us together join hands and uplift them, empower them, and free them from their horrific existence. Freedom is priceless.  Without providing them with Rehabilitation and the right products and services, these people will keep on living a dying death every second of every day.

Whether an individual has been injured, or had a heart attack or a stroke, or something similar which will inevitably produce some form of a disability.  This disability can range from a minor to a major disability, as well can be either a genetical disability, a temporary, a long term disability or a permanent disability.  Regardless of the type of disability, if Rehabilitation is not provided, these people become invalids and suffer in silence all the abuse, the neglect, the deprivation of the basic needs, and die a lonesome, horrific living death daily every second of every day. "Being Unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat." By Mother Teresa. Can you imagine that?  Even the wealthy people are just left alone in a room, and suffer all kinds of abuse, because they cannot fend for themselves.  Unless we can provide them with the necessary tools, how can these people live their lives with dignity and productivity?

Whether an individual is living in North America or in India, the Corporate/Government world does not recognize the person with disability as a productive person.  All people with disabilities are lumped together in one category - USELESS.  They are not given jobs based on their ABILITIES and QUALIFICATIONS, but jobs are given due to their disabilities with minimum wages. Only less than 1% of people with disabilities in India are employed. Then we wonder why we cannot eradicate poverty?!!  Automatically, people with disabilities are labelled as: DISABLED = USELESS = MINIMUM WAGES/OR UNEMPLOYMENT = POVERTY.While North America is slowly waking up, the progress is extremely SLOW.

Let us wake up everyone, let us face up to these harsh realities.  India is the second most populous country in the world, with over one billion in Any One City and growing, alongwith the seniors and the disabled population growth.   "Concern for man and his fate must always form the chief interest of all technical endeavors. Never forget this in the midst of your diagrams and equations."  Albert Einstein.The process of rehabilitation is providing assistance to an individual to achieve the highest level of their independence and regain the quality of life - physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually.  Although it does not reverse the damage caused, it does assist the individual to restore to optimal health. Population growth does not equal to growth in resources though.  We need to concentrate on keeping up with the population growth by increasing our resources, and the most neglected one is Rehabilitation for the People with Disabilities.

These people suffer abuse, because they are an added cost to the family, which reflects the true burden of the population, since there is a lack of awareness, and understanding and a lack of funds, equipment and services  As the population increases, so do the numbers increase in the people with disabilities.

Nina,  President of New Independence New Abilities, (a Registered Non-Profit organization) Facility has worked during her private schooling in Calcutta, India, with Mother Teresa as a volunteer going to villages and teaching the basics of hygiene and education, as well, is the granddaughter of a doctor who was honored for his Humanitarian Work by the President of India, therefore, Nina’s life is aimed at providing help to people with limitations of body or mind and thus helping them realize their potential for work and life through adaptive aids technologies. This will be achieved by providing the necessary Medical Rehab services and equipment to Handicap people, such as, wheelchairs, electro magnates treatments, physiotherapy, water therapy (wherein the person in the wheelchair will be able to go into this specially designed and equipped pool while sitting in their wheelchair), orthosis, limb braces, special software for the physically disabled people, voice recognition software, specialized switches, print magnification systems, Braille production systems, and computer magnification systems, mobility products, special furniture and clothing specially designed to meet the unique individual needs of the person, ramps, and Handi-Bus system. These services will enable the Handicap person to be Free and Independent. And by providing them with these components will foster confidence, dignity, mental peace and a better quality of life. This will then assist these people to re-enter society and become a contributor and a participant in life. This in turn, will enable faster economic growth, promote the exchange of ideas, thus fostering understanding of different cultures and recognizes the global nature of co-existence, in any industry or environment.  Far too often we have heard that rapid population growth of the past few decades has deeply undermined our potential for social and economic progress.  We cannot despair, nor can we look away.  We must address and fix the problem.  Population growth and the disabled population growth is a drain on the economy.  Instead of meaningful and healthy 2400 calories a day lives, far too many Indians lead lives of mere subsistence, at far lower levels of nutrition, medical care, and sanitation than even basic considerations would dictate.  So how can they afford the equipment and the services?  Procrastination is fuel to fire. The disabled children cannot attend school, or obtain education due to their disability, since the schools, the parents, do not have the necessary equipment/transport.  The women with physical disabilities are treated very badly from their doctors, who do not address them directly, do not perform pap tests, etc.  They face many barriers in society due to the lack of awareness, knowledge, equipment, and services.  The schools do not even have basic ramps for wheelchairs nor do the resorts or the health centers have any facilities for the disabled population.This project will create thousands of jobs in India, as well in Canada, and the transfer of technologies from Canada to India, will generate millions of dollars for both the countries, while providing the necessary services and equipment to the handicap people.

By recognizing that to achieve real progress, it requires shared responsibility and a commitment to action, and commitment to work toward a clear outcome, linked to significant priorities.These technologies will benefit millions of handicap people as well the transfer of technologies to India, and specially  will benefit both the countries.

We require funds for the expenditures for purchasing, marketing, and implementation of the necessary components in order to launch this Medical Rehabilitation Facility, so that we can have the required impact.

NINA is presently working to identify humanitarian funding for this project, so that the implementation has a direct impact.there are over 750,000 remote villages in India which have absolutely no medical assistance available to them, and many die an unnecessary painful death.  These remote villages are untouched by India's prosperity and progress, it is here where over two-thirds of the population live, and endure back breaking, empty-stomach poverty.  In order to accomplish all of this, first and foremost we require substantial amount of funding, which will assist us in promoting awareness regarding People with Disabilities, thus enabling us to address their issues:
      a)    Mobile Tele Health Ambulances and Fire Trucks, so that lives can be saved and rehabilitated.
      b)    In the Facility, the process of rehabilitation includes various assistive aids, accessibility products, specialized transportation, education, skill training, and mainstreaming support into the work force.
      c)    Removing barriers to the participation for the People with Disabilities is another basic  step, so that these Special People can once again savor Freedom and Life.
      d)    All of these components will empower and enable these People to become Participants in Life with Better Attitude, become More Productive, and as a result these Special People will become Happy and Wholesome Individuals.
      e)   Due to the disabilities, a large number of people with disabilities are more than often denied education or jobs, which has a rippling effect on the family, and thus they become a drain and an added cost to the household finances, and the Society at large, which in turn manifests poverty.
      f)   Unless Rehabilitation and Education takes place, this cycle will continue.  The process of rehabilitation is extremely essential, since this will assist an individual to achieve the highest level of their independence and regain the quality of life - physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually.  Although it does not reverse the damage caused, it in fact does assist the individual to restore to optimal health.
      g)     Education for women is lagging behind in these progressive times.
      h)    Old Age also produces disabilities. Senior population is also growing, producing various disabilities, along with the related issues and problems.
      i)    India is the world's second most populous country in the world;  In any given large city, the population is over one billion, and along with the population growth, there is the growth also of the People with Disabilities of every age, race and class.  It is estimated that in any given city, 90 million people are suffering from one or other type of disability to various degrees.
      j)    91% of its population lives on $1.00 - $2.00 a day according to the U.N. Population reference bureau report.
      k)  According to a survey done by McKinsey & Co. in 2003, one bus served 1300 people, two public parking spots were provided for every 1000 cars, 17 public toilets for every million people, and one civic hospital for every 7.2 million people, over two-thirds of the people lack clean drinking water, and over 2 million have no access to a toilet, in any given city.  Every day over 150 year old drains, sewers collapse, the trains are cramped with over 4500 people, although their capacity is only 1750, therefore, over 3500 people are either injured, or die simply by falling off the trains, buses and buildings.
      l)    The percentage of disabled people that are employed in India is only 1%, as compared to other countries, which range from 40% or higher.
      m)   The women and children that are disabled - 40% had been raped, abused or assaulted, 64% had been verbally abused; girls and women and children have  little to zero access or escape route to services for the victims of violence. (sobsey 1988 a:1).
      n)    The epidemic of HIV/Aids is highest here, and the raped People of Disabilities are at a very high risk.
      o)    80% of all of the expenditures related to healthcare are borne by the patients, while only 12% is borne by the state, and the 3% expenditure is covered by insurance claims.  Therefore, it is out of reach of the majority of the public to have access to the high level healthcare facilities, making the pricing a sensitive issue.
    We can direct our entrepreneurial energy toward lifting these people in despair, whether they are living in poverty, or are disabled without any resources, or are uneducated, or unhealthy. Instead of year round fund-raising to meet operating costs and other associates expenses, it can be achieved in one swoop by collaborating with several key funding partners, thus producing a collaborative approach to funding, allowing no one to carry the entire burden or risk, since they become like a donors circle tied to each other, allowing each side to work towards each other thus allowing them to emerge with meaningful relationships.  The people who are wealthy will be invoiced the appropriate amounts for their products and services.  These funds will also enable us to provide free products and services to the poor and the disabled.

    We, at the "New Independence New Abilities" urge you to please extend your hand, as a colleague, as a peer, as a leader, instead of extending a handout of Pity.  This attitude will ultimately accomplish more for the growth, eliminate abject poverty, and provide awareness for People with Disabilities, thus producing solutions for the ultimate sustainability of every human being.  We are forward-looking, thus we are able to concentrate on creating opportunities and ideas so as to enable business growth, and health improvement.  We now require the bloodstream (funding) to give this unique Rehabilitation Facility a Life.

    While nationally, India is now becoming health conscious, those out in the "trenches" of human need and spiritual despair, witness the deterioration of family life and its most precious part - children - work silently .  I dream,  plan, collaborate and create models to harness the resources and unique strengths of both the Global and National people to work synergistically toward the reunification of the family with their Disabled family member which will break down the barriers and stigma associated with the Disabled.

I look forward to hearing from all of you and your kind co-operation, generous assistance/support of all our learned public, leaders, and celebrities in assisting us to implement and operate this one of a kind, state of the art, equipped with the latest technologies and equipment, this most wonderful healing Medical Rehabilitation Facility in India for the People with Disabilities. As Helen Keller said "Until the great mass of the people shall be filled with the sense of responsibility for each other's welfare, social justice can never be attained."

Thank you.

would like to nominate New Independence New Abilities for the People with Disabilities.  I have a younger sister who has Down Syndrome, and I love her with all my heart and soul.  It was a beautiful feeling when I came to know that NIna Nath was reaching out to help individuals who need love, attention, and someone to care for them and their future.  It can be a lonely life when one does not get the love and attention they need, and I want for all of us to encourage others to recognize the importance behind this wonderful organization New Independece New Abilities.  I salute all of you who have made this organization what it is today.

New Independence New Abilities -A Techno Rehab Facility

The burst of insight regarding Disabilities and the process of Rehabilitation comes when one's own loved one is hospitalized with broken neck (for example), and then we are reminded of how tormenting the physical suffering can be, and we silently wait and pray. We hear whispers of words from the medical team, words, such as "spinal cord damage", or "delicate surgery" or "paralysis" and waves of anxiety, and crippling fear, overpower us.

After the diagnosis is handed down, the next step to Recovery is Rehabilitation, where the individual is equipped with the right products and provided the right services that meet the unique needs of the individual.  That is when we realize that Rehabilitation is one of the most basic necessities to the road to recovery, and an important aspect of our daily lives, yet it is the most under valued service product. Therefore, I cannot stress enough the Power of Rehabilitation, which is life line, a second chance to gain New Independence New Abilities. Rehabilitation empowers the Person with Disabilities to plan and develop ways that they can participate as full citizens.

"All things appear and disappear because of the concurrence of causes and conditions. Nothing ever exists entirely alone; everything is in relation to everything else." By Buddha

Therefore, we are prioritizing Rehabilitation as Our Primary Focus by providing State of Art Technologically based One-Stop-Rehab-Facility-offering a variety of products and services customized for The People with Disabilities regardless of Age-Color-Caste-Class.

Therefore, please look deep in your heart, and VOTE AND DONATE GENEROUSLY.

Depression - The Silent Disability

Disability has many faces, so Beware, Be Careful, And Please Do Not Jump To Conclusions Too Soon.  Depression Is The Silent Killer -a form of Disability that is undetected by the human eye, and quite often, by the Medical Eye as well. We all have suffered some form of depression at some time in our lives.  Maybe a loved one died, and left us feeling empty, maybe a traumatic abuse situation led to a traumatic divorce, and then, maybe it is just the drabby weather!  Who know how and who gets affected to what degree?!  Yet in today's world, Depression is becoming a leading cause of Disability and Deaths.  Depression Is A Disease Just As Horrific As Any Other Disease Such As Cancer, Yes, I am comparing it to Cancer, Because Just as Cancer eats away at your insides, do does Depression.  The only Difference is you can see the cancerous cell and tumours, but quite often Depression is hidden behind a veil, unnoticed, undetected. Isn't it an awful cyle, apparently, according to the latest medical experts, Depression can lead to Cancers, Diabetes, and Many Other Diseases.

So, I strongly believe that promoting Awareness regarding Depression and its related Diseases will be a first step to Remove The Stigma attached to any emotional or mental related diseases. A Disease Is A Disease, Just Has Different Names, So Why The Social Stigma? Why The Label, Such as "Cracked" Or "Mental Case" Etc.?  This disease, Depression, (if caught early) is treatable with the right medications, and treatments, again, the word Rehabilitation, comes into play, TMS therapy and treatments etc. rehabilitate the individual to the extent that the individual can at least function on a regular basis, and become self-dependant. Aahh, the feeling of Freedom, that is being Self-Dependant.!!

In a country like India, where no one has time for depression, specially the poor, many atrocities are being committed to these people suffering from this disease. The girls and women with any kind of disability are abused, neglected, raped, mentally and physically tortured, and are forced to become either beggars, or are showcased as someone to be stared at, like a money taught to do a few tricks.  It is so awful, that when a child is born with a physical deformity, that child is killed immediately by the parents.  Imagine the emotional impact of killing one's own child, what emotional or mental suffering will that lead to?  These are just tip of the ice-berg so to speak, as examples that I am relating. You cannot begin to imagine the kinds of disabilities that are in the world, just now the Western world is promoting awareness of Mental disabilities, now, imagine, in progressive countries, the disabilities are now being acknowledged.  Can you imagine what the situation is like in the poor countries where people are just striving to live on a $1.00 - $2.00 a day?  WoW!!  If people like us, who are educated, and are able to do something about this situations, if we do not reach out our hands to uplift the people with disabilities suffering in India, who will?  Will you help me help them?

 It is imperative that a Medical Rehab Facility, a Technologically based, a One Stop Centre, for the People with Disabilities, be implemented as soon as possible, so that the suffering can stop and healing can occur, and Peace and Prosperity can reign again.

Will you be the Miracle to these People with Disabilities, Disabilities that have many many suffering and tortured faces?  If Nothing Else, I am sure you can give $1.00 a day, and your Blessings.  Please Vote and Donate - "New Independence New Abilities" Rehabilitation for People with Disabilities, and Become a Miracle in Their Lives.

Thank you.

Technology and People with Disabilities

I have read many stories on this site, I find that most of them are web related.  I agree that the web plays an important part in our lives, and that is the reason that I have opted to use this tool, your website to promote awareness regarding Rehabilitation for People with Disabilities Rehabilitation changes livesRehabilitation is Insurance Assuring Recovery to the extent that the person can change his/her life around and live out their lives with dignity and self-dependancy and freedom.

In India, people with disabilities are just shunned out, or locked away, or killed.  The reason being, there is no awareness, there is only stigma attached.  In today's technological based world, there are such wonderful innovative products and services available, that can totally change the lives of the people with disabilities, their families and friends and the society's attitudes.  It takes guts and courage to promote this awareness, and my life is totally dedicated to this cause.  All these tortures, rapes, abuse, poverty, illeteracy have to stop.  This cycle can only stop, if we can provide proper rehabilitation in a state of the art rehabilitation centre, rehabilitate the poor without charging them any fees, and only accepting fees/charges from the wealthy, who can opt to generously donate or sponsor an individual's rehabilitation.  The women, children, and girls that are disabled, believe me, are so abused that they actually welcome death.

If we cannot use technology to save and change the lives of people with disabilities, then there what will happen to our society?  As John F. Kennedy said: "If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.  Do we want to become prisoners of our own wealth, living in an oasis of prosperity surrounded by deserts of misery?"  Think about it.

Accessibility is another major issue.  The roads in India are bad enough in the cities, you cannot imagine the states of these roads in the remote areas.  That is where Technology can play a major role is changing and saving lives. We can provide an Ambulance equipped with the latest TeleMedicine equipment, since this remote technology transfers information instead of patients.  How many unnecessary lives can be saved!!, specially the lives of children!!  People from these villages travel to the major hospital in the city in bullock carts, which is their main transportation.  We can provide them with a Handi-Bus equipped with a electrical ramp to lift the wheelchair bound onto the bus, or the disabledWe cannot do this alone Any Corporation or person(s) can become sponsors, and we will have their Company's or the donors name on the vehicle "Donated by The Company/Person's Name" etc., good advertising, good will, good morale will be the benefits for the donors.  There are many ways to help if one wants to.  Please visit New Independence New Abilities for the full coverage.

Re: People with disabilities

Nina,

I'm glad you made those points because it's something we in the developed world are none too aware of. We discover these things and there are many who just don't believe. Others knowing more are well aware that speaking out may threaten both them and those they are trying to help. What I offer below will be of no surprise to you:

We're advocating large scale intervention and keeping this subject alive is part of why I'm here also with a project plan.

Down Syndrome - A Face of Disability

Down-Syndrome.  Makes one wonder why would our Creator give an innocent child, who hasn't even seen the light of day, Down-Syndrome, a Disability that has no cure.  The entire family is affected and heart broken. Trying to find a Rehabilitation Facility for some one with Down Syndrome is a great challenge even in North America. Oh yes, the schools that include these children have teachers who are untrained, have other students, cannot give attention to one child who has Down Syndrome, all they know what to do is to just send complaints, generally speaking. The school speech therapists has other such or similar students.  Now, how can the Society expect children or for that matter adults with disabilities to function at their optimum levels when there is no proper rehabilitation, one on one, available, no proper rehabilitation centre equipped with all the right tools, under one roof?  Does anyone realize how the parents have to work to provide food and shelter for this child as well as their other children, are overworked and tired out, and then they have to deal with this special child or an adult?  We need solutions, we need them now, in this life time.  We, in North America do not have a mere proper Rehab Facility, yes, we do have at least some resources, so imagine the same situation times a hundred in a country like India, where there is nothing available.  These kind of children are killed when they are born, and the mother cannot even object.  Cruelty.

I hope you can see the necessity for a Rehabilitation Facility, technologically based, equipped with the right tools, for People with Disabilities.  Talk about changing lives, this will revolutionize, and heal humankind, and change attitudes which will change lives of the abused, the tramped, the shunned, people with disabilities, and ultimately, the killings of innocent lives will stop.

Please Let us Use Technology to Change the Lives of People with Disabilities, by providing them with Medical Rehabilitation, technologically based, equipped with the latest products and services, and the best Medical Team.

Help us Help Them. Please become a Miracle in the Lives of the Lives of the People with Disabilities.  Reach Out Your Helping Hand and Lift them Out of This Cycle of Despair, Neglect, Disability, Abuse, and Poverty.  Together, we can End the Cycle.  Please Vote and Donate to New Independence New Abilities, dedicated to the People with Disabilities.

Thank you.

I have been reading the blogs, and it is striking to note that most of them are web-based companies, which is good.  But I strongly feel, that Technology does play a major role in the lives of People with Disabilities.  For instance, the TeleMedicine technology, which transfers information rather than the patient.  This can save lives of innocent people, stop the spreading of disease, and transport the patient to safety.  In the remote villages in India, (there are over 750,000 remote villages), a Mobile Ambulance equipped with this telemedicine technology will be a great asset.  A Mobile Fire Truck equipped with this remote technology, ambulance and fire truck all in one, can be a great blessing to the masses of victims that burned to death, specially women and girls or children with disabilities, because they know there is no hope of saving them, no one will know, there are no proper medical clinics, and the list goes on.  So, you see, TECHNOLOGY CAN ACTUALLY SAVE LIVES, REHABILITATE PEOPLE, PRODUCTS ARE GETTING MANUFACTURED MORE & MORE THAT ARE TECHNOLOGICALLY BASED, SUCH AS ARTIFICIAL LIMBS, ORTHOSIS, TO NAME A FEW. SO, I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT WE SHOULD UTILIZE THIS TECHNOLOGY TO REHABILITATE LIVES OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES, THIS IS CONCRETE ACTION.

I look forward to your votes, please vote, and BE A MIRACLE IN THE LIVES OF THESE PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES.  REMEMBER, DISABILITY DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE, IT COMES UNANNOUCED TO ANY ONE, AT ANY AGE, IT DOES NOT CARE WHETHER YOU ARE RICH OR POOR, OR WHAT COLOR OR CLASS YOU BELONG IT.

THE SOLUTION: A TECHNOLOGICALLY BASED MEDICAL REHAB FACILITY IN INDIA FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES, AND MOBILE UNITS EQUIPPED WITH REMOTE TELEMEDICINE/REMOTE TECHNOLOGIES.   PLEASE VOTE GENEROUSLY, AND SPREAD THE WORD.   THANK YOU.

Dear Voters,  http://www.netsquared.org/projects/vote

"All things appear and disappear because of the concurrence of causes and conditions. Nothing ever exists entirely alone; everything is in relation to everything else." Buddha

Please take a moment and think if something happenned to your loved one, what would you do, where would you go?  In the Western world, there are many facilities and products, but in courttries like India, where as soon as a child is born that is disfigured, or has a disability, instead of trying to save that child's life, the child is killed, while most of the time, the mother is unaware of this. She is told that the it was a stillborn.  In India, the women and girls are taught from an early age to be submissive, to be tolerant, to always keep things inside, even if your husband tortures you, you are not to tell anyone about this, in short, the male has all of the freedom, but there are many restrictions on women.  Everyday, there are many women burned by either the husband or the in-laws, if they are lucky enough to have someone save their lives, the emotional and mental trauma, alongwith the disfiguration, is too much for the woman to bear, and ultimately, she ends up committing suicide.  In today's progressive world, only the wealthy and strong women, are now learning to stand up for themselves, while the middle-class and under, suffer silently.

All of these circumstances, lead to some form of disability or other.  If we, in the Western world, who are educated and find these circumstances abhorring, do not step up and lend a helping hand to these unfortunate people, who will?  There are so many reasons why we should have a Rehabilitation Facility in India for People with Disabilities.  Someone has to start the process now.  I have started this process, and I am hopeful that the pull of humanity will definitely win.

Therefore, I invite you to please VOTE for this humanitarian project, so that we can take CONCRETE ACTION.  Please Be A Miracle In The Lives Of People With Disabilities In India.   Thank you.

In the Spirit of Humanity and Technology/Change,

Nina

Mental Illness - A Face of Disability - Plays Hide and Seek

TECHNOLGY + REHABILITATION = RECOVERY, INDEPENDENCE, ABILITIES, EMPOWERMENT, to the extent that the People with Disabilities can function to their equitable and optimal health/disability. Disabilities: There are many many different kinds of disabilities, some are visible, and some unvisible.  These people with disablities are humans, individuals, who have more challenges than many of us in walking, moving, speaking learning, simple breathing, hearing, climbing stairs, taking care of oneself in their daily lives. They are PERSONS FIRST, after that they are disabled person, or person with disability These people with disabilities have the same rights as any other, the same rights accomplish whatever they want at their own rate, by using tools and methods suitable to them and in their own way.  Suffering impact, or disability impact, only they know and feel, and they find their own selves through the right rehabilitation, products and services. " I laugh, I love, I hope, I try, I hurt, I need, I fear, I cry.  And I know you do the same things too.  So, we're really not that different, me and you." By Colin Raye.Physical disabilities can range from, neuromuscular, heart conditions, respiratory, orthopedic, pulmonary disorders.  They utilize assistive aids, such as, wheel,chairs, canes, artificial limbs to obtain moility. This type of disability can be genetical, or a result of an injury, trauma, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, or due to a disease or accident - amputation of limb(s).  Some of them are "hidden disabilities" not visible, such as epilepsy, or respiratory problems, or depression, etc. Examples:-Autism - it significantly affects communication and social interactions, usually evident at an early age; Deafness - is a severe hearing impairment which prevents the individual to process; Blindness and deafness combined - it affects hearing and visual; Mental Retardation - this significantly affects the functioning of general intelligence, which transforms in behavioural and other problems; Multiple disabilities - a combination of disabilities, usually two or more; Othopedic disabilities - these are physical, and are usually caused by disease, and/or causes; Serious/Other disabilities - such as chronic Pain, or chronic health problems, has limited strength, energy, and is less alert. It can show as unhappiness, fear, and responses inappropriately; Learning Disability -  Usually is a psychological disorder in proccessing the understanding of either written or spoken language, inability to listen and pay attention, or read, write etc.; Speech Disability - such as stuttering, a barrier to communication; Brain Injury - is the result of an injury caused to the brain, and limits the functions of the person, either physically or pschylogically, or both, and is a serious disability.  There are many difficulties that the People with Disabilities have to face daily, such as Access issues, vision, coordination, communication, and stamina. Therefore, it is necessary to become aware of disabilities and its related issues, by acknowledging that the person has a disabiltyJust because a person with Physical disabilities uses a wheel-chair for example, does not mean that the person is "faking" it, or that the person cannot walk with some aid such as walkers, or scooters, or even a cane. We, at the "New Independence New Abilities" encourage the Technological Companies to develop such products and services that can be used to enhance, and empower the lives of the People with Disabilities.  Technology has produced such great products, such as the Scooter, Speech synthiser, or elevated wheel-chairs, specialized golf-carts, beach-wheel chairs, electrical wheel chairs, Tele-communications for the visually impaired, etc.  These products provide FREEDOM, and ACCESSIBILITY to these people.  Here are some Myths and Facts regarding People with disabilities- Mental:Myth: Think positively and pull yourself together. Fact is that people who suffer from mental illnesses are suffering from brain disorders, and hardly have any control;Myth: Schizophrenia means that the person has multiple personalities.  Fact: This disease, Schizophrenia changes how the person thinks, and "multiple or split" personality is a totally different disorder.Myth: How often have we heart that family stress or other life traumas are the cause of Mental Illness?  Fact: Stress plays a role, but is not due to "we are bad parents" or such.Myth: We usually think that people who suffer from mental illness are dangerous and are very violent.  Fact: This is a disease that changes or distorts/or exagerates the person's personality, however, if you are a peaceful person by nature, you won't change into a violent one, and really, most often, they are no more violent generally.  Quite often, we assume, (a natural reaction), that People with Disabilities are a seperate, ugly, sick, untouchable Breed. If you look back in the mid '40's to mid '70's, you will be surprised to note that America had a law that stated that for someone who has visible disabilities must not be see in the public.!! Imagine. Although we have come to the realization that these people are also persons, Disabilities Act is formed now, which encourages us to talk and look, and educate, and hire, and accomodate these people. Unfortunately, even today, in our progressive educational cultures in the Western world, People with Disabilities, even today, face many barriers, whether it is at home, public places, or at work. These are due to the learned attitudes, and we need to change these attitudinal behaviours, and to help everyone to become aware of these issues and become sensitize to the needs of these People with Disabilities. We should treat these People with Disabilities that is EQUITABLE in relation to others. It is imperative that we, as a global community, join together to promote awareness, to provide the right equipment and services that meet the unique needs of the People with Disabilities.  In countries like North America, we still lag behind in many areas that can benefit these people, specially when TECHNOLOGY + EDUCATION is advanced, how can countries like India, and other such countries provide the People with Disabilities products and services?  Therefore, we know there is a real need for a Rehab Facility in India, which will provide rehabilitation to the extent that the person can function at all levels and areas of life, thus living a worthwhile prosperous life with dignity and respect.  Let us Break This Cycle and uplift these people with disabilities by Diagnosis, Treatments, Counselling, and Out-Fitting them with the Right Products Programs, and Services, in a Technologically based Medical Rehabilitation Facility in India, which will enable them to acquire their "New Independence New Abilities", a Facility with a dedicated Medical Team, speacilizing in the unique areas of Disabilities.  I look forward to your support.  Please Vote for "New Independence New Abilities" A Rehab Facility in India, for the People with Disabilities. These type of Facilities are much needed all around the Globe as well, specially in today's busy and stressful lives.

Thank you.

Dear Nina,      Thank you for your work and dedication!!  While many mentally ill people are peaceful, certain mental illness brain disorders (like some types of bipolar and other serious mood disorders) do effect behavior, including violent behavior.  These disorders cause tremendous suffering for so many people.  Medicine and talk therapy often help, but it is also critical to understand that deficiencies in Omega-3 fish oil, vitamin deficiencies, hidden allergies, and food additives/chemicals wreak havoc with some individuals.  EEG computer biofeedback therapy may also help.  ONLY with this wider approach to treatment, and lots of love and support are we able to help our teenage son lead a reasonably good life and stay on the right path.      Because mental illness is a serious social issue, causing many problems in our world, I ask you to please consider a separate section to address it.  Thank you again for your work and dedication, for helping to make the world a better place.                Submitted by Susan (not verified) on April 13, 2007 - 8:20am.

Dear Susan,

" If you want a message to be heard, it has got to be sent out. To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it." Mother Teresa.

Thank you for taking time to send me your valuable feed-back.  I empathize with you, and agree with your thoughts.  Let us together promote awareness to the general public, because with that comes acceptance and inclusion, instead of abuse, lonliness, seggragation, and silent sufferings.

At your request, I have tried to write a small piece on Mental Illness with the same title.  I hope that this will get the  ball rolling for promoting awareness, and getting all of us engaged in talking about its related issues openly, so that the medical community and the governments will be able to provide the necessary resources, and funding for the programs and the development of the right technological tools to enable the mentally challenged to live out their lives in an equitably and dignified manner.

My prayers are with you, your son, and family.  Always keep the "Hope" light burning.

Let's change the lives of People with Disabilities.

Nina

I vote for this project,

I vote for this project, since Technology can change the lives of People with Disabilities, by Providing them with a State of the Art Medical Rehabilitation Facility in India equipped with the latest technological products, programs and services, including Mobile Units, such as Ambulances and Fire Trucks and Handi-Buses, equipped with the TeleMedicine remote technologies, which transfers information rather than people.  Due to the poverty and the culture in India, the women and girls in India, specially with Disabilities, end up dead, or raped, abused, killed at birth, or locked up in a room. They suffer in silence and they die in silence.

I strongly believe that this Project should definitely a winner.

Thank you.

Nina

Technology plays a major

Technology plays a major part in the lives of people with disabilities. In India, there is so much poverty and people don’t have access to working capital such as technology and wealth. I vote for this project it is very important to the well being of a world that has so much to offer, yet the economic structure is extremely imbalanced.

VOTE FOR NINA

I just wanted to add my comments to this blog and to recommend that netsquared users really look at the work and dedication that has been given to this project by Nina Nath. Here is a woman who in spite of her own disabilities is trying to make a difference in the lives of the disabled in her home land. Her project has been years in the making, and she has spent endless hours researching and putting together a plan of how to help those in need in India. I truly admire Nina and her ambition to make a difference in the world!

God Bless you Nina.
