A New Reality - Changing the World one play and one artist at a time

Challenges Entered:
Race, age, ethnicity, gender or disability don't matter. Artists with talent should work. With us they do and find a home. We mesh artists of all kinds for a new reality in theatre.

Founded in early 2001, we at Nicu's Spoon are dedicated to producing socially reflective theatrical works that present new ideas, challenge stereotypes, and touch the heart in an unexpected way.  We celebrate the collaborative spirit in developing productions that are pertinent for today's global, diverse and rapidly changing world.  New York City is full of people of different ethnicities and abilities; on the move and unheard.  We give voice to those who are very much a part of our world, but whose stories often go untold. We are committed to involve the spectrum of diverse and multi-abled voices in our play selection, our programs and internships, in our artistic, production and volunteer staffs, and in our audience.

We reflect society—not politics.

Our work brings together a diverse group, casts against type, confronts stereotypes head on and creates new performance styles demanded by the meshing of abled and disabled and multi-racial, multi-cultural performers. We want the artist and audience to make the leap from ‘There is no way this will work’ to ‘Oh my god, that was amazing—we did it.’ Entering our home space at 38 West 38th St., 5th Floor in NYC in mid– 2007, we produce work that changes the way you see the world, the way you think of yourself, what you believe art is – that is what we are about.

WHAT WE NEED:

Mostly technical - purchase of equipment for providing better services to disabled artists and performers, providing RSS and video feeds. This will aloow us even greater access to a growing community.

Project Assessment
Sustainability Model:
We have been active for 7 years, are moving into a permanent space April 1 of this year and can expend to serve the grassroots community in ealing with the new reality of all abilities and ethnicities and ages beign artists together. We have never had a deficit in our history and have Time Warner Corporation and Target as seasonal sponsors. Each year our budget increases up to 30% and we do just fine - in our new space we will also rent subsidized periods to community groups unable to afford other spaces.
Project goals:
Fast purchase of disability assistance equipment, fast setting up of rss and streaming video in order to get our images out to the diverse communities we serve. The ability to put American Sign Language online gets the word out in another way as well, as does a vocal website for the blind. Grassroots work with local groups of disability and color on artistic projects.Work on projects to encourage young playwrights under 18 - developmental work could be done online. We have the staff, just not the funds to impliment it all within 90 days. We can raise some funds but the need is enormous.
Identified Obstacles:
We need more technical ability. Our new re-designed website goes live April 1 but we need the ability to RSS and do streaming video as well as to purchase equipment to ensure our new space serves all the diverse abilities we work with.
