Project Vision Statement & Potential Social Impact:

Imagine how much good could be accomplished if all nonprofits could articulate goals, plan programs, define success, measure results, and use those results for program improvement. Innovation Network's Point K Learning Center provides free online tools and resources for program planning and evaluation, and we're seeking to develop our online community features. Recently spotlighted on SocialEdge as "a Web 2.0 tool for measuring effectiveness in the social sector," Point K serves a community of nearly 9,000 people at over 1,800 organizations in 60 countries and counting. This community has grown steadily despite very little marketing, because users find Point K's tools relevant, practical, and readily available.

In the words of our "Community Faces,"

* Point K tools helped push us to establish protocols for the implementation and refinement of our services. They aren't top-down guidelines that don’t apply; they based on the reality of our work, and that is more useful than anything.

* Participants have commented that Point K was immediately helpful to get a broad grasp of organizational issues, and have asked if their entire staff could also use it.

* Before Point K, we had no stationary place or idea of how to share information. Having a logic model on Point K makes it easier to explain to new staff, the board, and our partners what we do, and it has saved us an enormous amount of time communicating new ideas.

Built on the open source LAMP platform, Point K supports and connects nonprofit practitioners in planning, managing, and evaluating their programs. A NetSquared Innovation Award supporting enhancements to Point K would accelerate the possibilities and implications for nonprofit practitioners, evaluators, funders, and consultants to share and collaborate as they articulate, measure, and communicate the impact of their work.

Sustainability (financial) model:

Most of the Point K community comes from organizations with budgets under $1 million; many have under $500 a year to spend on their efforts. To keep evaluation know-how within their reach, Point K's tools and resources are free. Historically, Innovation Network’s web-based activities have been supported through major grants. We recognize that being dependent on grants leaves our online community vulnerable to shifts in grantmaker priorities, and makes us less able to respond to the community's development priorities. To create unrestricted funds for website support, we have been experimenting with a variety of revenue streams, including: R&D and maintenance contributions from Innovation Network's thriving consulting and training practice; online donations, through Network for Good; affiliate marketing in association with the Amazon.com; applying for funding specifically for online community support (such as this nomination to NetSquared); and an e-commerce solution in which we would offer workshops (now in the curriculum development stage) and other online products and services on a fee-paying basis. These revenue streams are not yet sufficient to support the site entirely, and some have been less lucrative than we had hoped. We will continue to seek, test, and implement ways of increasing Point K's sustainability.

Potential obstacles:

The main obstacle to Point K community development may lie within the community itself. Are there enough visitors to Point K who are sufficiently engaged to rate our resources and write reviews? Do our community members know enough about RSS feeds and tagging to be receptive to such new features? Will they use these capabilities to contribute to Point K and learn from each other? We think so: The Point K community already sends us hundreds of pieces of feedback about our website, resources, and services every year, even when the mechanisms for doing so are somewhat burdensome.

Resource Needs:

An award from NetSquared would help accelerate improvements to Point K. We are constantly seeking new funding partners to help defray the costs of developing new community features (such as RSS and tagging), updating website content, providing technical support to the Point K community, and implementing an e-commerce solution to boost sustainability. Technical resources from TechSoup's Technology Innovation Fund would also be of great assistance in helping us clarify web development priorities, and training and assisting Innovation Network staff in setting up RSS and tagging capabilities.

Key Milestones:

Submit specifications to web developer (week of March 19)

Developer reviews specs, prepares sizings and recommendations for community features; walkthrough with staff (March 19-April 1)

Staff review sizings, finalize work order (April 2-6)

Initial development (April 9-May 11, depending on developer availability)

Population and testing--alpha/quality assurance (May 14-June 1)

Developer fixes bugs found during testing (June 1-15)

Cleanup / launch prep (June 18-22)

Launch as beta (on or about June 25)
