Building community in your area? Check out the newly-launched Community Organizers Handbook! Everything you need to start and grow a NetSquared Local group or any other community-powered program.
Text to Change will develop interactive SMS -based quizzes to increase HIV/AIDS knowledge and discussion among mobile phone users. The participants will receive general knowledge and reply to multiple choice questions related to HIV/AIDS subjects. They will send in their answers by SMS, free of charge, while retaining their anonymity. More specific background information leading to the right answers will be found in a special column printed in the local newspapers and posted on the TTC website. Three questions a week will be sent to registered participants by SMS covering a three month period. The questions will be focused on: HIV prevention (general knowledge, condom use, STI, behavioral change, Mother to child transmission (MTCT);Stigma and discrimination issues; Where to go for voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) as well as treatment for HIV and secondary infections. In addition, the SMS-based tool can play a role in other areas, such as treatment, education (adherence, treatment knowledge-building) and monitoring and evaluation. If a participant sends in a correct answer, he or she will receive a confirmation SMS with explanation from the TTC server. If someone submits an incorrect answer, a rectifying SMS will automatically follow from the database with the correct answer in combination with an explanation. This will enable TTC to structure the questions and build up a dialogue with the participants. In order to stimulate the participants, the quiz will be linked with a reward system (incentive). Participants who submit correct answers can win attractive prizes. Winners will be contacted by SMS at the end of each week and at the end of the quiz. After the last round, winners will be selected, based on the overall results

I have recently read a nice
I have recently read a nice blog on HIV Education. I was really very pleased after having that post. Even I have joined with a NGO after reading that very post, but this post is really a booster for me to work harder on this issue.
This is a very useful
This is a very useful applicaiton of SMS in dealing with issues like HIV/Aids that are still taboo in many places. In fact, I can also see it being applied to other critical public health issues such as Malaria, TB, water born diseases etc where there still isn't enough awarness. Good Luck
check out our project (Columbia University), when you get a chance and and give us your comments

Innovation
Looks like an effective methodology to reach men in Uganda and it could have furhter applications with VCT promotion. Thanks for the innovative idea-- it appears very cost-effective and therefore fairly sustainable as well.
Cheers,
Kimberly
Innovation
Kimberly, thanks for the support!!
partnerships
Has anyone at WOUGNET, Women of Uganda Network, been approached about this project? They should at least know about it; some of their member NGOs may want to partner on the project and get the word out about the program locally as well.
Are you involving other HIV/AIDS-prevention programs in Uganda?

If you want an all-around
If you want an all-around comfortable pencil that you won't care if you lose it, then the Ticonderoga Tri-Write is a bargain. If you up your budget a little bit you can have a very nice writing pencil with the Osiris for less than twice the price of the Tri-Write, and for double the price of the Osiris you can take a leap in graphite quality with the Staedtler Noris Ergosoft.

Partnerships
Dear Jayne, We haven't had contact with Women of Uganda Network, can you recommend anyone who we should contact. My colleagues in Kampala will be more than happy to follow-up on this. We are involving the programs of the Aids Information Center in Uganda and are exploring partnerships with various other local organizations. Do not hesitate contacting me if you need more information or if you have more valuable advice. Thanks, Hajo
