David J. Neff is a long-time innovator, blogger, and nonprofit founder. He recently co-authored the book, The Future of Nonprofits: Innovate and Thrive in the Digital Age, with Randal C. Moss. It is aimed at nonprofit employees at all levels who are interested in learning how innovation, internal entrepreneurship, fundraising and social media communications are going impact nonprofits in the next five years.
Beth Kanter and Allison Fine's book, The Networked Nonprofit, is now out and starting lots of conversations. But what's everyone talking about? Below I've shared some excerpts and resources to get you started and ready to join in!
Getting Started
Let's start at the beginning: what is a "networked nonprofit" anyway? As Beth and Allison explain:
I recently wrote this post about a new book called Digital Activism Decoded and followed up with editor Mary Joyce to learn more. Read the full interview below.
About the book:
Help Beth Kanter and Allison Fine celebrate the release of their book, The Networked Nonprofit, at their book party online or in San Francisco! At the event, you'll be able to buy a copy of the book, get the authors' signatures, and ask them questions about the book and their work.
A new book has recently been published that I thought some of you might be interested in reading. It's all about how we can use technology for political activism. While many books have already been written about the tools and tactics available for activists online, this is the first book to attempt to map the field of digital activism in its entirety.
Given how obsessed everyone was with how social media helped elect Barack Obama, I’m surprised that I haven’t read more reviews of this book: “Yes We Did – An Inside Look at How Social Media Built the Obama Brand†by Rahaf Harfoush, which gives an excellent overview over how the Obama campaign used social media to mobilize people to donate time and  money.
Is your organization trying to figure out how to use Web 2.0 tools to work with young people? Ben Rigby of Mobile Voter, and the folks from Rock the Vote have authored a new book, Mobilizing Generation 2.0: A Practical Guide to Using Web 2.0 Technologies to Recruit, Organize and Engage Youth, that could be just what you need!
In an interview with Ben on the Net2 Blog and Net2 Podcast, Rigby talks about Mobilizing Generation 2.0:
"It's about how nonprofits and political campaigns are using Web 2.0 tech to engage young people in civic life and politics. There are seven main chapters. Myself and my research teams looked into blogging, social networking, video and photo sharing, mobile phones, wikis, maps, and virtual worlds. In each of these areas we investigated how the software was being used by organizations to accomplish their mission-related objectives.
